L144 houseing for breeding
L144 houseing for breeding
Hello! I'm new to this site, and have read a alot of info on my L144 black eyed yellow bristelnose plecos.
Currently, my pleco's are a little bigger than 2inches. I have read of some L144s breeding when they were only about 3 inches.
So..., I thought that I should start getting some kind of decent breeding home for my L144s. (at this moment I don't even know which ones are male and which ones are female No bristels to tell me yet. Maybe all male or all female )
...Anyway,
I do already have drift wood and a tube like house, but from what I've been reading here, this tube is not going to work.
Where I live, I have no place close to me to make an self made unglazed (?I don't know if that's the correct word) house. Should I try and make something using wood and silicon?
I've been looking for things in fish stores on and off line, but can't seem to find what I'm supposed to be getting.
Any advice will be welcome !
Thank you in advance !!

Welcome to Planet Catfish.
If anywhere near you sell unglazed plant pots or such-like, that would work fine. I've used a plant-saucer (what you put UNDER the plant pots) with part of the edge cut off to make an entrance. You can cut it with a hack-saw if you soak the ceramic overnight.
Or you can use plastic pipes (there's usually white water-pipes available in most DIY places - pick the more solid looking ones, as they are more likely to sink. Unfortunately, the more natural looking grey or black ones are less likely to sink, so you're better off with the white ones).
A third option is to use ceramic tiles and aquarium silicone. You'll need to be able to cut the tiles to be able to get the right dimensions. Use white-glazed tiles, as other colours may contain stuff that you don't want in the tank... Instead of tiles, you can use slate.

Hello! Mats! Thank you for your reply!
I live in Japan, but yes, we do have all the things that you have mentioned !
I think I will start off with the plastic pipes, since that sounds like the easiest!
I'll make sure to get the solid looking ones!
If I can't find one that will sink..., well I'll just try the other houses that you have suggested!!
Thank you again!!

Don't know much about pipes in Japan, so if you do find something that works (or doesn't), you could add it to the thread for reference to other Japanese "pipe users".
Could you also add at least Japan (if you wish, also which town/city in Japan, etc) to the entry "Location" in your profile - as that may help us help you with more specific advice (particularly as there are some other Japan-residents on the forum, so they can give specific advice on matters that only work in Japan).

Hello Mats!
I'm sorry I left out my location. I recently had a very bad experience on another fish site (not pleco related) where a very active memeber on the site, attacked me for the current status of North Korea & the current state of the Japanese Constitution (forbidding war).
As for housing:
I haven't yet been to a store where they have pipes, but I will make sure to post whatever I find that works.
But, there was one funny thing that I found out, when I got to talk on the net to a fellow Japanese pleco lover. He/she wasn't planning to breed but, one day he/she found his/her long finned bristlenose plecos' eggs on the outer side of the house that he/her provided them... !!!
He/she seemes to have used a rectangular block with 4 rectangular holes going through as a house.
Anyway, I will keep you posted!

I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, it's impossible to stop people from somtimes saying what they are thinking - even if it's inappropriate to say in public.Beats wrote:Hello Mats!

Here at Planet Catfish there's a ban on any political posts, so that should be "avoidable" here - obviously, moderators aren't awake and present 24 hours a day, but we do have moderators spread across the planet (Europe, Asia and America), so it should be possible to moderate such things before it blows up - should anyone try to start such a thing.
Please feel free to send PM or such to any of the moderators if this becomes a problem.

Mine spawn in caves I make from Bamboo.
I just cut it to a suitable length and then silicone it to a ceramic tile, works great.

FuglyDragon, thank you for sharing your idea!!
We definatly have bamboo, and actually we have stone made houses looking just like that!
The smallest one is: about 2.6"(6.5cm) wide and about 4.4"(11cm) long.
The next size would be: about 2.6"(6.5cm) wide and about about 6.8"(17cm)long.
Maybe I'll take a look at one of these first, since my LFS has them, and I am thinking of going there tomorrow !!
Thanks again!!
I've put up a picture of the stone made one, that we have here in Japan.
