too many broken links

Post by traumatic »

Per Jools request I stir this subject up a little; Recently while doing catfish hobby research online (much to do about bringing me here)I've come across a monstrous number of broken links, particularly in the anouncements section and several articles. These are mainly pertaining to links involving individual species pages or any page that may have been relocated after upgrades to the site. It is, seemingly, impossible to fix ALL the links but some that may be archived and or used for research purposes may be a possibility.

Chad,

If you see broken links, please post in this thread which page the link is broken on (and if you can, also supply the correct link).

Jools is pretty good at fixing these things, but of course, like any good developer (website or other types of development), there is a long list of "things to do", which has to be prioritized, so if there is "more important work" to be done, expect it to take some time to get to these things. But I do know that Jools does appreciate feedback on broken links - if there's one thing harder than fixing all broken links, then it is "finding all the broken links".

I did a trawl for the most obvious ones a while back and wrote them down as I found them.

Posts in the Announcement section, I could possibly fix (moderators can edit posts by others!), but unfortunately, I haven't got access to the source-files for any of the web-site, so if it's not in a forum, I can't fix it...

Hi, I was going to look in the Forum----Catfish Wanted/For Sale and received a "The forum you selected does not exist." message. Since I don't see it anywhere in the forums, maybe it has been discontinued?

And this one:
Frequently Asked Questions

Home | Search FAQ |

Q: Why do you need my location in the Forum? What should I put in my location?

A: It's all in the forum rules - have a look here.

I get a "server not found message."

You all have a very nice site and the information is so very helpful.

Have a great day, Pat

I'll fix the FAQ [That's another area that I _CAN_ access].

The menu for the "wanted/for sale" menu item is a "Jools" thing - probably not very hard at all [Actually, it redirected me to the Spam-forum, which is where all the spam-posts end up - but that's not really helpfull, just for Jools informaton - obviously the "Average user" would not be able to read this forum...].

Yes, when it comes to regular posts (not the annoucement section), the most frequent problem I would think is Cat-eLog references that use the "final" URL.

For example:
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... cies_id=49
is not sustainable - since I joined PlanetCatfish a couple of years back, it's changed twice for different reasons, and the above is the "current" form. There is nothing saying that there isn't a new version comin in future years - even if it's not happening this year. Older links may also not be easy to resolve if the id-number for the species isn't the same - which of course, if you haven't got the old-database to look at, you can't really figure out (you can perhaps find out if it's COMPLETELY wrong).

Code: Select all

[clog]Ancistrus sp(3)[/clog]
(which gives )
and
http://www.planetcatfish.com/scripts/cl ... trus+sp(3)
are sustainable, becuase there is a layer of php-code to "translate" the link into what the ACTUAL species is.

If there are "important" posts that anyone thinks should be fixed, please post a link to the thread here, and I'll see if I can fix them up.

Another FAQ that doesn't work:
Q: Awesome site - do you have any banners so that I can link to it?

A: We sure do! Check out http://www.planetcatfish.com/core/link_logos.php .

Unfortunaly, I don't know where to link this to... [I tried searching the site, but it either came up with "none" or "too many" hits, depending on what I typed in as the search field - there's probably something obvious to type in, but it's probably just too easy for my complicated brain ;-)

http://www.planetcatfish.com/core/banners.php, it's linked to from the links page.

The Forum Drop Down menu is now updated, so the "For Sale/Wanted" bit is no longer in the menu...
