IME usually most fish have intact dorsal fins with minimal damage assuming no injury,congenital abnormality nutritional,or other environmental insult. Nature seems to aim for symmetry.So if you start with an intact juvenile specimen that is kept in optimal water conditions and seemingly adequate ...

IMO Your water was probably OK but the results are limited by the quality of the test kits used. Your fish may have been carrying a parasite which caused the fish to succumb to a secondary bacterial infection as evidenced by Viktors observations despite your efforts because being in a captive ...

Have you looked really close for any signs of ich? Sometimes it's not so obvious. The fish can show the symptoms you are describing before the white spots appear. What is the water temp? Does the fish hyperventilate? Does it have any fin or barbel deterioration? The pH is pushing the limits a bit ...

feeding cooked fish filet

Are there any problems with precooking fish filets, smelt etc prior to feeding them to a predatory catfish to avoid potential bacterial or parasitic contaminents.I have not found a specific comment on this.It doesnt appear that this is commonly done.
