Re: Lophiosilurus Alexandri Spawning!

Hi Yellowcat, awesome to read your updates. Been awhile since you and I have spoken about our Pacmans. The potential possibility of them spawning for you is awesome. I look forward to hearing updates.

It's also nice to see yours have assumed behavior similar to mine. With the exception of breeding ...

Re: I am said to be silver turushuki, what am I?

Thanks much, Richard and Kolt.

What do you think of the price, Kolt? Seems excessive but they are quite rare, aren't they?
No problem Viktor, glad I could help. They're very rare in the trade as far as I know but yes IMHO it's a bit excessive. I bought mine from Rapps at 10 inches for $137 ...

I agree with Richard B. Face structure, scute size and plate design looks like Centrodoras Brachiatus to me. Here's a pic of mine for comparison.

Re: Tocantinsia piresi

Where did you find that these are (also) from Rio Xingu? Afaik, they're only known from Rio Tocantins - hence the genus name.

Wrt the light colouration, pls bear in mind that many freshly wildcaught species show a yellowish glow, which sadly almost always wears off after some time in captivity/the ...

I've never seen them for sale in the US but ran across this http://aquafin.jp/blog/?p=12659. Since I've always favored Auchenipteridae and like lighter coloration on cats these guys immediately appealed to me. Info. on them is far and few between so I was hoping to ask for some help here. There ...

Re: Trachy Trachy or some other species of Auchenipteridae

Thanks for the suggestion exasperatus2002, It's a good one. I imagine atmospheric and other changes in weather patterns are detected by fish and do indeed help induce spawning but it never occurred to me to try and time a water change with a storm. That's a really good suggestion, thanks; I'll ...

Re: Trachy Trachy or some other species of Auchenipteridae

Thanks Marc it's truly appreciated, I'll just keep at it and hopefully it'll pay off. My next move is building stone hides and siliconing them together. Thus far the Trachy's have entwined in what looks like it could be a mating attempt in the open but no luck thus far. I'm hoping building a hide ...

Thanks Mark and Jools for the replies, it's truly appreciated and I apologize for taking so long to respond. Trachy Trachy or some other species of Auchenipteridae

Picked this cat up recently from Jeff Rapps as Trachycorystes sp. Golden. She 10 inches and looks to be a female and looks like she could be Trachy Trachy with her protruding lower jaw and general body shape but her coloration is definitely unique. While not Golden she is a dark Tan with some brown ...

Re: Unidentified doradidae being brought in by Jeff Rapps/TU

Looks like a Pterodoras to me. I think granulosus or, since less than half of SA fishes have been described to date, an undescribed Pterodoras may be possible. I cannot discount Pterodoras rivasi http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=871

I hope others than me who know what ...

Unidentified doradidae being brought in by Jeff Rapps/TUIC

Jeff Rapps of Tangled Up In Cichlids was nice enough to share with me some pics of a potential Doradidae cat he maybe getting in whose i.d. remains in question(he knows I'm a Dora fiend :d ). The pics where taken in two locations, two pics in the market where dead specimens where being sold as food ...

Re: Centrodoras Brachiatus

Small update: I had to remove a Megalodoras Uranoscopas from the tank that contained the Centrodoras due to aggression. I had seen the Centro act aggressively towards the Trachy's but not so much toward the Megalodoras except when there was a hide the Centro wanted. I did how ever note that the ...

Re: Megalonema platycephalum

As far as the sizing, fishbase has 30 cm TL which is 300 mm

Planet has 180 mm SL

TL is total length, the length from the tip of the snout to the end of the caudal fin

SL is standard length, from the tip of the snout to the base of the caudal fin

Considering the length of the caudal the ...

Megalonema platycephalum

I was thinking about picking up 2-3 and the info. on them is pretty scarce. From the little that was available though I gathered that they prefer groups like many pims and I'd render a guess that their personality is probably pretty similar to Pimelodus Ornatus. My only question is what's their max ...

I think it came back to me. It was the gars. Not that pacu are innocuous. Only recently did I realize that it was the pacu that were destroying my channel cats for the last 5 years. Pacu made it a habit of biting off bits of channel's fins and barbels eventually almost to stubs. Looks like they ...

Yes I did, unfortunately it was the last one. He had started with 10 or so, I was strapped for cash when he first brought them in; so I had to settle for just the one he had left.

Re: Can I have a jaguar catfish

The only stock I'd worry about is the convict as they can seriously be nasty. Other then that the cichlids you chose aren't too aggressive. As far as the Jag goes he should be alright in 75 but unless you set up the tank lighting to be diffused you'll probably hardly ever see them. As for lowering ...

Due to an ever decreasing interest in fishes, I'm considering a complete hobby stop. I'm currently down to just one tank and it wouldn't surprise me if that one goes as well.
One thing that could make me change my mind is to become a real fishkeeper again instead of a "virtual" one. The past few ...
