Re: Zeolite-Cancer Involvement

Silicas don't cause cancer by standard means, rather they cannot be removed by your body and cause a chronic irritation in your lungs. Zeolites are no worse for your fish than any other sand you might be using in your tank.

What are the tank dimensions? If the tank is well wooded, the any of the panaques should do well. As far as cories, anything should be fine. A good general rule is at least 6 of each species. I currently have a 6' x 1.5' tank with a mix of 14 trilineatus and schwartzi, and this seems to be a pretty ...

As much fun as it is to watch the cories feed, I think the best and simplest method might just be to put the worms in after 10-25 minutes of lights out.

Do fish taste sweetness

I work at a well known ingredients manufacturer where I am in constant contact with a product that tastes several hundreds of times sweeter than sucrose. When I get home from work I can still taste the sweetness on my hands after several washings/showers. I am not worried about putting too much ...

Feeding cories and not danios

Every time I try to feed my cories bloodworms I end up with zebra danios so stuffed that they have worms hanging out of their mouths. I have tried things like placing a piece of wood, or a rock over the worms, but the danios always seem to find a few sticking out. This causes them to swarm around ...

Depends on what wood you have. If you have a light wood that won't sink, then boiling it will help waterlog it so that it sinks. If you got the wood from outdoors, then boiling will help sterilize it. If you want all of the tannins out of the wood quickly, boil it. If you have a denser wood and don ...

Towards the end of October I am hoping to add a bristlenose or two. In December I am hoping for L-190. After that perhaps a few more L-#'s if I can get my hands on. Depending on avaliablility probably some loaches too. Somewhere down the line I might even have to break down and get something with ...

When to add corys

I am setting up a 125 gallon tank with a pair of Rena Filstar XP3's for filtration. Last week I added one of the large packages of bio-spira and a dozen zebra danios. Assuming that the bio-spira was still good and I have no ammonia/nitrites, when would be an appropriate time to add c. julii, c ...

How to acheive the best circulation in a 6' tank

I have a 72"x18" tank that will have a depth of 12-24". My filtration will be a pair of Filstar XP3's (350 GPH) with inline heaters. The inhabitants of the tank will be whatever L-#'s I can get my hands on in Central Illinois (panaque and ansistrus sp. are my top choices). I will fill the tank with ...

You can clean sand just fine, it is actually easier because the waste can't penetrate the surface. Instead of pushing your gravel vac into the sand like you would gravel, just wave it over the top to suck up the waste. As far as switching over, I would suggest changing out the gravel a little bit at ...

I can keep a full grown human in my closet alive for years. Should I? Also, catfish make great pond fish as well as aquarium fish. In a 36 gallon tank you could easily keep a school of cories, a dwarf bristlenose, or any number of species. Just not happily with the goldfish and koi. With a coldwater ...

They are not the same thing. I believe mopani is found in african deserts. It is very hard, and comes in either very light or very dark. I think bogwood is generally something like malaysian wood. Generally a dark brown that is a bit softer. Both tend to sink without needing to waterlog them first.

I can't really recomend anything. Your tank is already way overstocked as is. Koi are more or less exclusively pond fish, and should never be in tanks (except for some very rare exceptions). The same deal pretty much applies to the goldfish. Just 2 would really be pushing it in a tank that size.

Panaque Missing an eye

So I just bought a Royal Plec. When I was taking pictures to get a location ID, I noticed that he was missing an eye. There is no clear wound, suggesting that this has happened some time far in the fish's past. Assuming that he has fully healed and won't get infected, is there anything wrong with a ...

Have you tested them to see if they hold water well? I tried a 50 gal container once, but it bowed out way too far for my liking. I went to the heavy duty 26 gallon one (if you were shopping Lowes it is the black one with the yellow top).

Is there any reason that you are against just a standard siphon? For my sand bottom tank (currently only 2' off the ground) I use a 3' piece of hose (1/2" ID I think) that I bought from the hardware store, and there is plenty of suction power. What I was mainly thinking was, "I have an X gallon tank, show me what would be appropriate to house in it", so either separating the fish into size bands or allowing the user to select only a certain size range would be an adequate solution.

How interchangeable are L-190 and L-090

I have recently been looking for an L-190 Royal plec, and every time (it has happend three times) I think I found one, the seller at the last minute realizes that the fish is in fact L-090.

Are there any differences between the species, or is the L-090 a variant with the long trailing cuadal fins?

It was more of a heavy to carry around thing. Depending on when I get it, I should only have to move it once or twice. Since I would need a second person to carry a 65 gal anyone, I guess it doesn't really matter too much.

Thanks for the reply.

Plexi and plecos

I am looking to buy a new tank, and based on the weight of larger glass tanks, I was thinking of going with acrylic.

Are there any obvious plecos to say away from besides panaques?
