P. Pictus
I put 3 in my 120g (48x24x24 inches). They have not stopped moving for 3 weeks. I am pretty sure they are the most active fish I have ever seen, including tiger barbs. Stole food out of the swordtails mouths. Those aren't exactly retiring fish either. Now I want a few more, but keep wondering what ...

Basement fish corner
So through no fault of my own, I have gained a number of empty fish tanks. 3 extra 20 gal (24x12x17), a pair 29 gallon (30x12x20) tanks full of water, sitting on the floor. Plus the 2x 5g and 2x 10g). Plus a 75, it has its own stand, but it needs to go somewhere. So basically, I need to make all ...

Re: confession time: worst fishkeeping screw ups! come on folks we've all done them!
Actually, I have kept a few. My favourite is Steatocranus tinanti however I also like many of the South American species. Jools I had those. Very fun, I had 5 that turned into about 30 in a 5 ft 80 gallon. Then the whole tank crashed, and they all died within a week, leaving the Congo tetras ...

I sold the raphaels. I saw a bristlenose fry go across the glass today. Just under 3 weeks in the 75. Its actually still sitting on the basement floor. Small, and I don't know who spawned in which cave, but pretty interesting that they bred so soon after a 4 day truck ride. 6 days in a bucket. Lost ...

They're banned in a few US states too, including my current one. My next state, however, seems to allow them.

Has anyone kept them? I'd like a few in a future 75, but their companions are stumping me. Gold barbs (Barbodes semifasciolatus) seem the most likely (assuming the wild colored ones aren't available, which they usually aren't.) Rosy barbs are a little big considering I'd have the loaches bouncing ...

To reduce nitrogen? A lot of them.
That is the bane of many slow growing, easy to do plants. They have low requirements, but don't grow fast enough to take out much.

Re: Got to respect them goldfish sometimes...
I've had convicts and swordtails end up in a sump. They grow pretty well considering the wetdry should remove most food from the water.
They do appear pretty pale. I wonder if the loss of color in some species while in captivity is due to a lack of light.

Can guppies actually eat bristlenose fry? Water quality is generally the big downfall for any fry.

Re: Moving big spiny fish
Nothing as big as 25cm. I did move a C. uropthalmus (false red terror/mayan) that big 6 hours away once. 15cm doridids though. Cichlids too, though I'm not sure which ones would come along. Maybe the Salvini pair or gymnogeophagus. Current plan is to pull fish as I break the tanks down. One tank ...

Moving big spiny fish
Well, there might be a move in the future, and I would like to not sell all my fish for this cross country move. I have moved fish and aquariums before, but only day moves, not a 3 days drive. This makes me think breather bags, though that means single bagging some 6 inch plecos and raphaels. I ...

Re: Coolwater
Small update. I'm keeping 7 Gymnogeophagus "yerbalito" (http://www.cichlidae.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7107) and some white clouds in a 75 gallon. At 65f, as low as my heater will go, they are eating nearly as greedily as they did at 75f. They are still pretty small, but the 2 confirmed males ...

Otos and plants
Large leafed plants and vertical flat rock surfaces (especially slate). Not essential, but likes bogwood and a large rounded substrate. Live plants seem essential to the long term survival of this fish. Most videos and pictures though, show them being caught from leaf litter. Do they have access to ...

You get two birthdays! One for when you figure is their 3 decade mark, then another when you have them for 30 years.
They are very long lived for a fish their size, aren't they.

Platydoras growth rate
I bought 4 Platydoras armatulus in March of 2013. Fish were kept in a us 20 long (30x12x12). Nothing was done to maximize growth, so I'm sure they can grow much faster. I measured them by placing a scale in their bucket (a US Quarter= 1 inch) and photographing the bucket. Then I used imagej to draw ...

Re: Proposed Variety (Morph) Naming Scheme for Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus (BN)
On breed vs variant. Really, we're dealing with neither. In the snake world, they call it a color morph. The corn snake comes in dozens of colors. If you compare it to dogs, just changing the color does not usually get you a breed. Maybe the longfin ones? Variant is maybe a little too popular when ...
Re: Coolwater
True, although you can then have the inverse problem come summer. Reef keepers now have powerheads that sit outside the tank! This tank does have a small internal filter (Tetra Whisper Internal Power Filter- commonly used for palladium systems too). It would be interesting to compare that to an HOB ...
Re: Coolwater
I guess this is a fine place to put this. I was screwing around with the 10g betta/bristlenose tank. This tank is kept warm, about 82f (convenient conversion to C is 28C). With the house heat set at 60f, jumping to 65f between 5pm and 10pm, it used 1.288 kW. I added half inch foam to the back and ...

Stocking ideas. Platydoras and others
Well, I now have an open 120 gallon (48x24x24) and an empty 75 gallon (48x18x20). I also have an 80g (60x18x18), and several smaller tanks. I'll have 2 20 longs (betta/bristlenose and betta/cories) and a spare 10 gallon. Unassigned fish are the Salvini/Convict pairs (the 80 or 75), the Platydoras (4 ...

Re: Coolwater
Speaking of Florida. One of their most common invasive fish are the Oscars. I would think that of all the species they'd have trouble with the sometimes cooler water. Maybe the Orinoco wet season is a bit cooler than is commonly reported? With the tanks and the dehumidifier, the basement room is ...
Coolwater
I know there is an old thread from a few years back, but is anyone doing any new coolwater tanks? Maybe OLD coolwater tanks, since it seems that most of the early imports that survived were tolerant of cooler water. I'm slowly working on the fish room that should keep the temperature warm enough ...

Fishroom Air
Is there anything out there on sizing air pumps? It seems like there should be some math or science behind it, but most of what I've seen is "get a $200 linear air pump" or "I just horde cheap pumps." So I have a few big tanks that I want to run air on, then expand to smaller tanks for raising fry ...

How are the sunfish aggression wise? I've only fished for them, but they are pretty darn aggressive if anything looks at their nest. Bullheads will eat anything that fits in their mouth, that does include Giant Danios. I had one small one take a hook almost half its size. I was trying to catch some ...

A 120 is very heavy. I got mine into an apartment by sliding it on couch cushions. Its now in a basement, which required 2 people. Its going to take a moving company to get it out.
