I'm personally interested in but only a few Catfish..I normally am interested more in North American Minnows, Killifish and Livebearers or in big toothy ganoid fish. The catfish I do keep tend to be pretty controversial and very misunderstood. I keep only "parasitic" Trichomycterids and as an off ...

Re: Vandellia spawning reported

Hey guys, wasn't sure where to put this. Richard Kik III of Michigan recently had a spawning of a Vandellia species, known to many as "Candiru". Richard is a serious researcher, and has worked as a naturalist with the Detroit Zoo for some time. He's also involved in some research projects involving ...

Just a note on the Etymology of the common name "Candiru". It is the Portuguese equivalent of the Spanish Canero or carnaro. The name Candiru is thought to come from the native Tupi language and is a description of any various Trichomycterid or Cetopsid catfish. It may as well be "Minnow". In the ...

this means you're saying that ANY fish that exists should be kept in captivity because it exists?? Please read what I wrote because that was not what I said and to relate Baleen whales and rhinos to Trichomycterids is about as far as a jump as you can get. 99% of the Trichomycterid catfishes are ...

They're highly specialized fish that do NOT accept other foodsources. it says in the link " obligate parasitism wich means that it MUST feed on a host. otherwise it would be incipient parasitism ..... this occurs in Tridensimilis for example. those tiny "glass Trichomycterids" accept artemia ...

Not that I'm in disagreement but do you have a reference that states this?

I'm very well aware that these fish are a taxonomic mess. I heard it both that the species is valid and not valid as V. plazaii. I'd like some further clarification on both sides of the issue.

Suggestions requested for the ID of this Vandellia

I'm guessing V. plazaii from early examination however I'm not so sure and not confident of that ID 100%. I do know these fish were collected in Peru. Anyone with some thoughts, leads or useful genus references I'd be interested. http://aquaticpredators.com/forums/uploads/post-271-1137772238.jpg ...
