Are they rarer then the other ones?
Well, i can't tell for sure, but i myself have yet only seen the uniform grayish/black one for sale and never the other one (only on slides).

Any idea how large they get? According to fishbase approx. 20cm SL. Although i haven't seen such large specimens yet in Aquaria. But that might be because most ppl give them away when they start eating the other tank members ;) In any case watch out if you keep them with smaller tankmates like ...

3.Is it deadly? Yes. Ok, im dead then ;) Seriously, there are at least two species of Heteropneustes which are sold as H. fossilis, a uniform grayish/black one and a rather brownish with a creamy lateral stripe. I don't know which one is H. fossilis, would be interesting to investigate on this one ...

Yes, catfish eyes are insensitive to red light
Not that i doubt you Rusty, but do you have any citation for that? Because like posted above, from what i read till now they seem to be able to detect red light.

Hi Marshel, I have experienced C. virginae as a very skittish and easily stressed species. Thus large tanks (at least 80x40cm "floor space", the larger the tank the better), with a lot of hiding places are suitable.Best place the tank where is not too much "traffic" in front of it. They are also ...

Hi,

i have to agree with Christian, looks like a very stressed Baryancistrus (L18 imo) to me too.
I remember an article about color modifications in Loricariids by Ingo Seidel in DATZ some years ago, and among other things he pictured a miscolored L18 that looked like your fish.

Natalie,

IMO closest to your fish is Corydoras sp. C 41 from Rondonia (See Evers, H.-G. 1996 Panzerwelse aus Brasilien DATZ 49(3): 172-173. Unfortunatly i couldn't find a pic online, but the coloration of your fish almost exactly matches the picture of C41 in DATZ.

Hi Collingwood, juvenile Hemiloricaria can be tricky to feed, especially when they come from an lfs and have starved for some time. Apparently thats not the case in your Hemiloricaria though they have a filled belly as you write. Hemiloricaria are omnivorous with a strong leaning to carnivorous and ...
