Boy did you hit the nail on the head, lol. I realized yesterday that my filter had quit working. I cleaned it out, and now it's running fine. I also picked up a little 5 1/2 gal. tank to use as a quarentine tank, so I have the Pictus cats in that. I'm treating that with Maracyn-Two, and finishing ...

Careers with ornamental fish

Hi,
Do any of you guys know of any websites or have information on careers with specifically ornamental (no food-related, etc.) fish?

hemmorhaging in P. pictus

I've got three P. pictus in my tank that are showing signs of hemorrhaging, with fin rot. Panicking, I immediately treated the tank with penicillin. After doing some research online, I'm starting to suspect septicemia. According to lots of websites, Maracyn Two is the only effective treatment for ...

For variety, I tend to go to Pets Inc. at Mill Ave. & Southern, though this is the place that put the sick cory in the main tanks. They've got tons of tanks, and plenty of catfish. Last time I went they had 5 or 6 different species of cory. For knowledge and some really good deals on equiptment, I ...

I agree, the pet stores out here aren't the best (not that I have anywhere to compare them to, lmao). I returned a sick cory to an LFS once, and they put him right back in the main tank right in front of me! It's good to know that I can, even if eventually, make profit off of having tanks, and not ...

Where abouts in Az are you? I'm in Tempe... Interesting that you are looking into starting a fish farm... I've been toying with the idea of breeding fish for a living, but everyone says you can't make a living out of it, unless you actually set up a fish farm with ponds and what not... Not really ...

Several Questions

First: my pictus cat ate an oto last night... obviously, I can't do anything for the oto, but I was wondering if this is going to do damage to my Pim? Second: I moved my otos into another tank... Do I have to worry about my striped Raphaels or Dojo loach eatting them? They're about an inch in length ...

I just learned the oto/pim lesson last night, when I came home and could only find 2 of the 3 otos i had put in the tank the night before, then noticed my pictus cats stomach was oddly shaped... needless to say, I moved the remaining 2 imediately! When I first got my fist tank, my ten gallon ...

Sick Spotted Dojo

I bought a spotted dojo yesterday, which had two light patches, which i figured might have been normal, as I have never owned one before. Now, this has become one massive stretch, and it looks like there are hemorhage (sp?)spots at the start and end of this patch. He is also having a hard time ...

They probably are C. Trilineatus, but they were labeled C. Julii when I bought them, so I'm in the habit of calling them julii because I wasn't sure if they were completely non-existant in pet stores, or just hard to find. What are the odds of these guys being julii? Also, are there many diferences ...

Question on Breeding C. julii

I've read that to breed C. julii you need to similate a drought with little food, then similate a monsoon... Whats the best way to go about this? Should I be careful not to 'splash' when I do water changes by using a cup instead of a bucket, and feed just a little every other day during the 'drought ...

Friendly Columbian Shark!

Just thought I would share this story, as I was really excited about this event this morning: I was doing a water change in my 10 gallon, when my Columbian Shark, Mau, came up to my finger and nipped at it for food! Surprised about this, I immediately grabbed some flakes and put them on my finger ...

Well, the pH is still about 7.8-8.0. Using the cat-e-log, this seems to be on the higher end of tolerable pH for the shark, but too high for the pictus. I'm aiming for about 7.0, which I think would be ok for both of them. The water is quite hard, too. Also, the shark is still a juvenile, about 2 ...

Changing pH

I was originally using tap water in my tanks, but the pH went up to 8.6! I'm slowly switching to drinking water to lower the pH. I've been doing water changes every other day of about 25% or so, and refilling with mostly tap, but maybe about 1/3rd of a gallon of the drinking water (I add in a little ...

I'm thinking I already know the answer to this, but, I guess I will have to demote the guppies to my 10 gallon when I get the Jaguar cats? Would the guppies be ok with the upside down cats? I'm planning to get them first.

Jaguar cats & Upside Down cats

In my never-ending research to figure out what to put in my 50gal once its done cycling, I thought I had it figured out... My plan for it included a pair of jaguar cats (supposed to grow 8-10") and some Upside Down cats (4"). I was discussing this with a guy that works at the pet store by my house ...

Sorry, I don't know the dimensions of my tank off hand, but assuming it were about 3 1/2-4ft across and about 1 1/2ft wide, would 5 larger corys (about 2-2 1/2" full grown) and 4 pictus cats be ok, or would that be too many bottom dwellers?

Sorry, still learning the rules/ettiquite of this board. I'll keep your tip about polls in mind from now on. As far as the idea, i just thought it was cute & that I would mention it. If other, more important updates are to be made to the site, then I agree that those should be the ones being done.

What to put in 55gal?

I'm in the process of setting up a 55gal tank, with not-particularly-great dimensions... It's pretty tall which takes quite a bit off the width & length. Its going to be a freshwater aquarium. I'm a big fan of bottom-dwellers, but know that I shouldnt have too many... I'm looking to keep pictus cats ...

Ok, this is kinda dorky, and probably very difficult/time consuming to set up, but just an idea... I remember a website that I went on a long time ago where you create your own cell-type. You choose the shape, mode of motility, etc. Then you placed it in an environment, and the site would update ...
