Re: Which xingu spp will be extinct?
I'm on the side of collecting to preserve the species. Maybe that's outside of biological ethics, but it makes sense to me. I suppose there's a financial benefit to breeding something extinct in the wild, but that's not my motivation. L082 has just always been a bucket list fish for me, and I miss ...

Which xingu spp will be extinct?
Hi everyone! I haven't posted in several years because I got into saltwater, had twins, and generally had life take over fish interests. Recently, I've been considering getting one or two breeding tanks going for xingu fish, ever since seeing some l82's on aquabid and 174's on Facebook. I'm really ...

Re: ID pleco
I'd probably want to rule out L048 or other b&w scobiancustrus, before saying it's a sure hypan. At that size, it would make sense that the spots aren't fully defined yet.

Re: L240 bloated, breathing rapidly
Thanks everyone. She's still alive, not noticeably worse, but not noticably better. The metronidazole as a bath is at least, maybe, preventing the problem from getting worse. I've treated african cichlids for bloat using metro and it worked great as a bath, so hopefully she'll do better over time. I ...

thanks for the reply! I generally feed NLS pellets to all of my fish but I do remember using up some frozen brine shrimp a few weeks ago.

That almost looks like LDA33...very hard to tell, but the mouth looks a little big for a hypan.

L240 bloated, breathing rapidly
Hi everyone, I need help with my large female L240. I've had her two years and she's been perfectly healthy the whole time, but then I found her the other night bloated and breathing very, very fast. I've been treating with tetracycline and metronidazole (the only meds I had on hand), with no ...

Re: Yellowy/Goldy L260
It's not the same in 333 - though the intensity of yellow can change based on age, stress, etc. I'm not 100% convinced that b&w l333 is even the same fish as the yellow variant, or exists at all, for that matter. I've seen too many grow up to be 399, 401, 66, 450, or are hybrids of some of those ...

Re: Yellowy/Goldy L260
It depends on diet and I've seen fish go back and forth. Don't quote me, but I think a more veggie-rich diet promotes the yellow.

Re: Venture a guess??? New clearer pics
Looks exactly like an ancistrus to me. Considering there were also albinos available, I can't think of any more likely candidate. Maybe the slightly "off" appearance is due to hybridization or just individual variability.

Re: L400?
lower xingu has a square tail - this fish has a lyre tail of L400 or L399. I don't think it's 400, but 399 is a good possibility. Size matters, too. Smaller 400's are more sparsely spotted/striped and gain marks as they grow. It could even be L066 - they look very nicely marked as smaller fish and ...

WTB male Hypancistrus Lower Xingu
I just came across a mature female lower xingu and need to find her a male. I can trade a handful of L260, L270, or L180 fry, a mature male L134, or just pay cash. If a trade, you ship me yours and I'll ship you mine. If cash I'll pay for fish and shipping. I'm in WI - 54401 Here is my new girl for ...

Re: Black and White L333s? or L66s?
I don't have an ID, but I'll vote against l066 based on the non-lyre-tail and horizontal vs. vertical stripe pattern. This look closer to a 'lower xingu' than 66 or 333 that has more of a classic 'tiger' stripe pattern.

Re: Black and White L333s? or L66s?
In the US, at least, shipments of WC 'b&w333's' have contained 66's, 399's, lower xingu's, 401's, 450's, and maybe some b&w333's, if such a fish even exists. This fish could be anything, or a hybrid cross of anything. My entire group of 5 399's was bought as 333's in 2007 or so. They were striped at ...

I"d say 333 as well. In my group, one has a slightly elongated tail, like yours, while the others have squared tails.

I have a huge female L263 (brown vampire) and am looking for a male. If you can help out, please PM me to set things up. I can trade various plecos or just pay cash. Would need shipping to 54401 in WI or pickup if within driving distance.
Thanks!!

Tail doesn't look right to me to be L066. My first reaction was L236, but I'm fuzzy on the "lower Xingu" types. Could be the h sp. Santerum, too. I'm curious what other members think about it.

Re: help id black spotted L# ?????I KNOW WHAT IT IS NOW
It's hard to qualify but in my mind it's very obviously not l82. The fish is short and compact with small spots vs long and slender with larger spots. The caudal peduncle is also thick in l82, which isn't represented with this fish. The interopocular odentodes are also very exaggerated in this fish ...

Re: help id black spotted L# ?????I KNOW WHAT IT IS NOW
This wouldn't be the first time a black/white fish was mislabeled. The worst I saw was a 8" l240 sold as lda33. Your fish sold as l82 would be right up there. I hope you didn't pay 82 prices - 82 is worth about 5-20x what an l201 is, depending on where you shop.

Re: help id black spotted L# ?????I KNOW WHAT IT IS NOW
I'll bet every pleco I have that yours is NOT L082. It's a hypancistrus - either contradens or L201. I'm voting for a well conditioned L201. Can't say it forcefully enough - NOT L082

Re: help id black spotted L# ?????newest pic is better
I don't see any reason why that fish couldn't be a well conditioned L201. It doesn't appear even extraordinarily large for either 201 or contradens. Remember that the catelog is in standard length, which doesn't include the caudal.

Re: Safe to say these are female?
It's never safe with frogs. I've had very large "females" spike up after either removing a male or conditioning them for breeding. You'll likely have to wait and see whether they become trappers or trappees. That said, all of my males cave and face inward while all of my females either don't cave or ...
