the smell seems to be going away. Im not sure how he could have over-fed as i said one shrimp cube a day(tho i may have... the one that wasnt eating made me a little antsy and prone to feed too often). The smell does seem to be getting better, and the fish is doing much better.

Help! Columbian Cat has stopped eating
Upon returning from a four day vacation I have found that one of my columbian shark catfish has stopped eating. I also lost one while I was gone, but the guy who was taking care of them for me flushed it without getting a good look so I don't know if this is the same issue or not.

Reno, eh? I like that! I've been dying to get back into the sign business and that seems like a great place to do it!
I've thought about washington or oregon. Even southern WI, but none of these really seemed right. What is the cost of living like in Reno? I'm sure it all averages out once you work ...

Oh, and unless your fish are big diggers, more than an inch (a half an inch even) of sand can cause more problems then it is probably worth. That is mearly my opinion of-course...
The top-most layer can provide a home to beneficial bacteria, but unless you stir the sand up [almost] daily, I think ...

Switched to sand, water still cloudy, safe to replace fish?
I just finished switching from gravel to sand, and I think my columbians are going to love it. I'd like to get the fish moved back into the tank as soon as possible as I'm a little conscerned the powerhead i have stirring up the water may not provide enough aeration(sp?) in their temporary 5 gallon ...

I slowly began switching my columbians over to full marine within a week of purchasing them. At that time, they were about 1.5 inches long. they've grown to be about 5" in about 3 months. As for tankmates, I'm not sure about corals, but I would imagine any crustation or fish that can fit in their ...

Thanks Coelacanth,
Actually, I'm working on designing a tank for my Columbian Cats that is basically plywood (with much added flare). Instead of using any standard sealant, my plan is to line the sides and back of the tank with 1/4" or lighter black plex, and get some good black silicon to finish ...

Hey, I'll make you a tank that size! I'd love to find a place already building custom tanks, or a public aquarium would be a really neat place to learn some stuff, but alas, I live in North Dakota. I'll be ready to move in the spring tho, so I can go to the Job/School as long as it's in a ...

Aquarium School? Taking it to the next level...
I have been thinking about taking the next step in becoming an 'expert' at the aquarium hobby. I figure these big aquariums must have filtration experts, who design the systems and whatnot.
Thoughts of late have been of designing custom aquariums/filtration systems for higher end customers. Glass ...

thanks again for your help, Mats. The cross test is a great idea.

columbian shark shedding...
one of my columbian sharks (recently perchased) seems to be shedding... This is not normal (i'd imagine). I haven't kept fish for some years now, and don't recall diseases. it's small, and only a $7.50 investment, but i'm fond of the little bugger (and it's tankmates). any ideas?

I have read both the cat-elog and the cotm articles (more in depth then before) and they are much help. I am looking forward to building a 200+ gallon aquarium and engineering a built in filtration system (i have a bit of time considering they are but wee lads at the moment [all named daryll by the ...
