indeed, so I would like to know which will, so I can avoid it. (reason : I have large tanks, therefore I want to put more than one species in one tank)megladonsharky wrote:Silly ?? why would you want to crossbreed??

breeding ancistrus species together ?
How do I know which ancistrus species will interbreed ? Or do none of them crossbreed ?
I'm thinking of 2 or 3 species.
- 'normal' albino ancistrus
- LDA08
- L144
As far as I know the L144 and the albino's won't crossbreed. But what about the LDA08 ?

baby ancistrus - feeding
Hi, As a first learning step in the ultimte goal of once breeding L046 I did put up some ancistrus (as almost everywhere recommended) So I had 5 ancistrus in a 250L tank with a pair of geophagus surinamensis, waiting for a tank of their own . This week a tank came free and I did the 5 ancistrus in ...

[quote="kdreymann Hi, I used to keep the banjos since years and they all have swollen bellies from time to time. I just dont't really know, where this comes from (food, air, trying to get rid of the skin?). But nothing to be scared about! Klaus[/quote] hi, nice inside observation :) let's hope this ...

Well, they liked the bloodworm! well I really hope it's just that. when I typed "swollen belly + fish" in google you get real nasty articles :? Not that I think back. In that community tank 3 out od 6 ancistrus died after introducing the banjo's. 2 without any signs, a third one was very thin and ...

Hi, about those 14 banjo's I brougth with me from that wholesaler that had gone broke. They were in pretty bad condition when they got here, having got no food for at least 2 weeks (probably 4), having been in cold water (20 - 22 °C) for a day or 3. The first 2 weeks they went into a sort of c ...

Look in this thread . It may help. The only thing what's new to me is that spawing would be initiated by a drop in temperature (like corys). But it still mention that captive spawings are accidental. Is this because they breed that difficult or because nobody really tried because a lack of interest ...

banjo catfish
Hi, due to a coincidence I got 16 banjo catfish like these : http://www.planetcatfish.com/cotm/1997-06.htm They were in bad shape and 2 didn't survive. So I still got 14 of the (3 big ones, 11 smaller) Now that I have them, I give it a try to get them to spawn. I made a tank ready for them measuring ...

metallhd, I have a CO2 system in my planted tank. But this is not on option with L-ies because you need a strong current and will loose lost of CO2 to the surface. And not sure what effects this blackwater extract has. It's surely an acid and will breakdown your KH (HCO3-) and replace it with tanins ...

energy costs of a fish house
Hi, I'm planning to convert my cellar into a fishhouse. As anyone any idea how much the energy costs would be ?? And how to keep them as low as possible ? for example : I could heat the place to 25°C with central heating and the heat the tank additionally with normal electric heaters. OR I could h ...

lowering pH
Hi, I was wondering how you guys lowered the pH below 7. 'normaal', 'pure' water which is completely aireated won't go below 7 (if you have at least some KH left) (with pure water I mean water with only the carbonate buffer present). I know you can add a phosphate buffer or some other buffer, or ...

breeding different species in the same tank
Hi, Let's say I have a large tank (around 1500 L) and I want to keep pleco's. Would it be possible to put, lets say, 6 L177 (Baryancistrus) and 6 L190 (Panaque) in the tank together and still have a chance of breeding some. Ofcours it would be wise to put only L177 or only L190 in the tank, or not ...

Can you tell us for what species have you made the breeding cave? Just 'ordinairy' bristlenose. I want to learn how to raise fry, ect. I'm just a newbie, so probably my method is old fashioned but I'll give it anyway. Underneath a picture of my method. The weigth is a piece of lead (will replace it with a stone with a hole). first breeding cage
Hi, I made my first breeding cage today. It's a flower pot with a 'tin' (??) / 'underlayer' (??) underneath. The reason to use the underlayer is to remove anything in the cage easily without disturbing the surroundings. Anyway, I think this should do. The female inspected the cages within a few ...

Hi all, as said before, I want to try to breed L-nrs (H. Zebra if possible) but I don't have any experience with raising fry or something like that. For gaining experience some suggested that I tried the bristlenose first. Today I was in a well known shop in Germany and saw a large, very active 4 ...

Hi guys, I've got two additional questions : 1) Seems L046 isn't that hard to breed if I read the reports. 1a) So why is it still that expensive ? I think many would like to have one in their community tank if the price was lowered a bit, but it still stays that high. 1b) Are these little creatures ...

Hi all, first hello, I'm just arrived here and glad I found you guys. Lots of plecos around here. My question is about the hypancistrus zebra L046. I found a lot about breeding them on the net, but one thing I didn't read. I know the males are dominant. Regarding this is it better to have several ...
