Re: New Hypancistrus

The dentition doesn't really fit with either genus. Maybe a new genus is in order? Maybe? Peckoltia has become a bit of a trashbin and needs splitting eventually, but this particular fish is still kind of shrouded in mystery. As you so brilliantly pointed out in your analysis of the material in the ...

Re: New Hypancistrus

I discussed this fish with Leandro Sousa when he and hos crew were on a survey in the Rio Tocantins. We did speculate at first if it was indeed a Hypancistrus, but we concluded it was Peckoltia sp(L080) . The dentition doesn't really fit with either genus. I'm unsure if there were more than one ...

Re: L332 Green Chubby plecos

There is no "deliberate" collecting of these for the ornamental fish trade (because the traders believe nobody wants to buy this colorless fish), so the ones coming in are usually bycatch specimens as pointed out above. Sad really, because they are so cool.

Re: Unexpected acquisition: Lamontichthys llanero

Nice catch! I find them quite easy to deal with once they decide to feed (meaning their gut system is working properly), then they are active and can hold their own even in a tank with other similar fish. They eat practically everything and are in many ways much like Sturisomatichthys - very ...

Re: Catcon 2024

It was a super fun weekend, I'm so glad I was invited over and could hang out with my Catfish Family! Great talks, great people, nice place (Burlington), excellent pizza and wildly varied air temperatures! 😅

Re: Catfish Photography

Yes, "the crying whiptail". These pictures look a lot like Spatuloricaria but it should be the species you mentioned. Did you, want any chance, get a picture of the mouth? Cheers, Jools It's definitely Loricaria nimairaco , despite a certain resemblance to Spatuloricaria. They are tank breds from ...

Re: Same photo used for two species

Hi guys,

Odd. It's S.nigrirostrum, not S.aureum. If I posted it under the wrong name somewhere I apologise!

Re: My Loricariidae pictures

Jools & crew; I have basically grown up with Planet Catfish. It has always been my favourite website. Looking back to when I first started experimenting with fish photography, I can see how my pictures have (luckily) improved in quality. Some of the older ones are no longer on par with my personal ...

I'm not sure about this fellow? An older B. splendens or something else? Could do with some help / ideas...
It was imported from Manaus, and said to be collected in the Rio Purus - that's all I know...

Re: My Loricariidae pictures

Good question, I must admit I don't know! I received it from Green Fish in Peru simply as Ancistrus sp. "Madre de Dios", so I think we have a few IDs to consider here. I haven't really looked closely into all those L-numbers given to Ancistrus types from the area, so feedback and suggestions would ...
