Re: How big can Synodontis ornatipinnis grow ?

Hi, CLOFFA 2 also mentions Poll (1971) with 22 cm TL. The other measurement given is 30-50 cm TL and apparently was taken from Matthes (1964): "Les poissons du lac Tumba et de la region d'Ikela. Étude systématique et écologique. Annales, Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Tervuren, Série in 8o, Sci ...

Re: Tachysurus=Pseudobagrus now

Hi,

I saw that the entries in Cat-eLog all have the genus spelled Trachysurus, while in the article it is Tachysurus, which is the correct spelling. Sorry to spoil your enthousiasm  .

PS My question is what the heck happened to the cyprinids in South America? They "rule" North America, Africa and Asia but missed out on the largest ,most spp diverse basins in the world. Go figure. John Briggs has a nice theory about that. Check Journal of Biogeography (2005), volume 32, pages 287 ...

Although Denticetopsis seducta Vari, Ferraris & de Pinna 2005 was studied, the name does not appear in the "included species" section under that genus on page 802.
Besides this, all species listed in the checklist of Ferraris (2007) are here.

Synodontis is feminine, so all the specific epithets must agree in gender, following Article 31.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The on-line version of the Catalog of Fishes says otherwise: "Genus regarded as feminine in Catalog of Fishes 1998; apparently it should be ...

Synodontis decorus normally has 2-4 dark bars on each lobe of the caudal fin and short ramifications on the maxillary barbels.
So, I would say they're not the 'real thing'.

Cat-eLog Data Sheet Synodontis batesii

Hi, the Cat-eLog Data Sheet for Synodontis batesii contains some errors. It contains data from the species Microsynodontis batesii Boulenger 1903 instead of Synodontis batesii Boulenger 1907. Scientific name should be Synodontis batesii Boulenger 1907. Type locality should be: Ja River at Bitye ...

Hi

as far as I can see is the anterior part of the dorsal spine heavily serrated, which IMO would make it a Synodontis batesii. This species is found in Cameroon.

Hi,

I cannot tell you if FishBase meaqures are correct, but Poll (1971) gives the following:

S. caudalis: 204 mm maximum total length, 145 mm maximum standard length

S. ornatipinnis: 220 maximum total length, 170 mm maximum standard length

This fish reminds of some specimens from the Mono R. basin (Togo) I studied. I could not name them after one of the known species in that region (which is poorly documented btw). My specimens had more mandibular teeth than is seen in S. obesus and a longer snout than is seen in S. nigrita. Maybe an ...

Does this mean that the revision on african Synodontis by Poll (1971) should be treated with reservation?
"Peau villeuse" (villose skin) is as it happens a major characteristic he uses to distinguish (groups of) species.

Hi all, I'm a Blegian M.Sc. in ichthyology, currently working on Synodontis spp. from Lower Guinea (West Central Africa) and West Africa, however not professionally. I myself do not own a fishtank, but I like reading stuff about "my" fishes on this site. Comments and ID's sometimes give me insights ...

Hi, there's another thing you could do, i.e. contacting Gert Boden at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (Belgium). He works for FishBase and he's responsible for the input of information on African fishes (especially freshwater species). His e-mail address is: gert.boden@africamuseum ...
