Re: Reverse Osmosis worth the effort?
I made the plunge, and bought a 600GPD RO unit, and I have everything set up now. After getting over the initial fear that the unit might explode into my face after potentially failing the setup, it now works smoothly :) I'm not here to chase numbers too much though, I just want more suitable water ...

Re: Duplicareus Dying. Roller Coaster Parameters or New (sick) Additions?
Its just, nothing happens for about 18 months. Then I start playing with rainwater (and adding 3 more C. Duplicareus) and suddenly within a few weeks, fish start dying. And what about the strange finrot of my L201? Did they fight? They have massive space and are still immature.. Either these 3 ...

Re: Duplicareus Dying. Roller Coaster Parameters or New (sick) Additions?
I now read in another forum: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/11-fertilizers-water-parameters/833082-too-sudden-change-tds.html That for delicate fish, a change of 10% in TDS can be fatal, as the osmotic pressure changes, and makes it hard for these fish to create the necessary osmotic balance. In ...

I haven't the heart to take a picture of my dead Cories. But It quickly becomes just the shells of a fish. Much like the shelling of shrimps.

Duplicareus Dying. Roller Coaster Parameters or New (sick) Additions?
I have been losing 4 C. Duplicareus over the course of about a month. (also 1 L 201) Thats in a tank that has run without incidents for 18 months. I did however make 2 recent changes, and the cause is probably to be found in one of those. I really need to know which. Kindly read below. 1. Water ...

Re: Reverse Osmosis worth the effort?
Couldn't you mix say 75% RO with 25% Tap water, in a "mixer" of sorts on top of the tank, that then drips directly into the aquarium?

Re: Reverse Osmosis worth the effort?
That's a setup I would love to try when I get another house. It sounds great. The research I have done mimics what you say Pseuda, I have found 3 units that will all produce "reasonable" amounts of waste water. (Depending on temperature/pressure) 500GPD 1:1 600GPD 1:2 800GDP 1:3 As an avid gardener ...

Hi all, I have an 800l "North West" Amazon biotope setup with the following stock: 4 L075 4 L091 4 L201 20 C. Duplicareus (Never had any eggs, for at least 12 months) 200 Cardinals Fish are doing well. But about 1 month ago I got 3 more C. duplicareus, and in at the same time I was trying to mix my ...

Will this improve my water clarity?
I have been reading up on some of Darrels old posts about the importance of oxygenation of biomedia, and filtering in general. It seems that the old school external filter (eheim style) that works both as bio and mechanical/syphon, is not necessarily the best way to go. What I'm slowly realizing is ...

Water change methods
Hallo, I was wondering if my weekly water change AND syphoning/vacuuming of the gravel/sand, is disturbing my tank unnessesarily. I can see 3 ways of doing it. 1. Do the water change while you syphon waste. This is disturbing everything in the aquarium quite a bit. 2. Just do the water change ...

Re: Turn off Powerheads at night, or not?
Interesting points. I have been very inspired by this post on rainy/dry season in our aquariums. http://www.plecoplanet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=650 I'm trying to make it so I do my water changes on rainy days with low pressure, and then increase the flow. Colder water and more flow plus low ...

Re: Turn off Powerheads at night, or not?
I think my next logical question would be, should I use a constant flow pattern, so as to mimic how the river (upper orinoco) flows, or could I change the flow rate during the day? Rivers change flow rates after heavy rainfall, but they probably don't change much during normal days. Right now I'm ...

That's a great article. It further underlines why constant aeration is important, especially for rheophilic species like many L numbers.
Ill leave them on!

Re: L091 Aggression
My initial thought would be to have 1 or maybe 2 different numbers in a 75 gallon, and you have what, 7? Use those bigger tanks you have and put them into species groups, rather than having 1 of each. In my opinion, having 1 single member of 10 different numbers is a strange setup. So many habitats ...

Re: Turn off Powerheads at night, or not?
You have a valid point
They do love the new flow in the tank, thats for sure. I have added a Maxpect Gyre XF250, developed for reef tanks, but its sublime in its recreation of a river flow too, everything is in motion!
I might just leave it on.

Turn off Powerheads at night, or not?
Most L numbers like a bit of water movement. In fact most like more flow than we can reasonably generate in our tank. (If you don't have the means like Pantarhei in Germany that is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKpWqgbkwSA) I can't figure out what I should do with my water flow at night. I keep ...

Hey Jobro,
That's the kind of answer I can put on repeat and listen to all day. Thanks.
Ill probably add 2 more of each, or if I can find them, some Dolichopterus.

L075 + L201 Stick with these or add one more pleco?
I have finally gotten around to getting 8 beautiful specimens of Peckoltia Sabaji and Hypancistrus Sp. L201. 4 each. I am considering either staying as is, add 2 more of each of the above so that I have 6 of each, or get 4 of one of the following: L091, L183 or L114. My thoughts are that L183 would ...

Heriberto Gimenez (Brazilian biologist at IMASUL- Instituto de Meio Ambiente de Mato Grosso do Sul), has responded in regards to where he finds L273.
"In rock crevices in the middle of sand bottom..
1-25meters
But 2 meters is more regular.."

Re: L273 - Breeding group, what mix?
That is what I hoped you would say. But I still wonder if they live around the many "Cachoeiras", like many plecos in rio Xingu. Those places are more like sand/rock, high water flow. I read that page over and over again, but still find it lacking in specifics about what their habitat is like. I'm ...

I should probably get 4-6 and then go from there.
Is there any info available on where they are caught? The closest I can get at the moment is "upper Tapajos".
Sand, wood, roots, rocks, water flow etc. Do we know anything?

Alright.
I wonder if 864L will be space enough for guys like these. I mean, for a pair, that would be ok.. but for 4-6, with perhaps some geophagus and corydoras. My tank will seem mighty small real quick.

L273 - Breeding group, what mix?
Hi,
I have found an importer that has some 10cm L273. And so I was wondering, if by any stretch of the imagination, I was to get a group of these magnificent creatures, what would be a good mix?
I know that it will take more than beginners luck to breed these. But please play along!
Cheers
Thomas

I have decided upon the following:
6 x L168
6 x L183
20 x C. Duplicareus
I am trying to find Hemiloricaria Melini and Oxyropsis Acutirostra, but no such luck yet.
