Re: Rineloricaria sp L010A
I had a group of them last year, and managed to raise a fair number of fry. After they spawned (inside a small piece of pvc) I'd move the pipe with the male and the eggs to a 10 gallon tank. I'd use a bowl so that they neve left the water or were disturbed too much, then after the eggs hatched I'd ...

Re: BN color genetics?
I had a trio of browns that produced about 25% albino fry. Some of their brown offspring that were scattered among various tanks to grow out have since matured and started spawning. I expected some albino fry from them too, and have found some, along with a few calico and even a couple super red fry.

Re: Hidey places for synodontis?.
Medium or large Cichlid Stones are decent hides for petricola or lucipinnis, particularly juvies. My multi's mainly hang out under rockpiles when they feel like ducking for cover. The younger ones aren't reluctant to show themselves at feeding time, the adults like it better if I turn off the direct ...

Re: Red Whiptails(L10a) spawning
I bred them last year, here's a few pics of the setup I used. The pvc "caves" were sitting directly below the aquaclear 70 in a 38 gallon tank. The tube with the male and eggs was moved into a 10 gallon shortly before hatching, then returned to the 38 after the fry were out. I fed the fry crushed ...

Re: My L134 Breeding efforts
Looking great, I have 6 that I've been waiting on to start spawning. Got them last year, think they're just about mature enough now from the looks of them. Need to get some proper caves though.

L144 crossbreeding
I just picked up a juvie L144, and was wondering if it needs to be kept separate from common BN's when it matures?

He's still alive, possibly gaining strength since he's not lying on his side any longer. He still isn't very active, but does seem to be swimming a bit better.

Re: Dying multi?
I did another partial water change, though considering the relatively light stocking I doubt that water quality was the cause. Are the genital papillae on males normally so prominent? I've never noticed them before, even when the group was against the front glass "surfing" the hob filter flow.

Re: Dying multi?
The other fish in the tank are 5 other multi's and 2m/1f ahli's. It doesn't look beat up or damaged by other fish.
That tank is fed once daily, either spirulina-based flakes or Omega One small pellets for the last couple weeks.
Can't check water parameters at the moment, no clue what my wife did ...

Dying multi?
I came home from work tonight and found one of my multi's lying on its side. Still alive, though apparently just barely, here's a couple pics. I don't know what's protruding from the vent(?)
Any idea/s what the problem is, and whether it's likely to affect the others?

Re: Regeneration in S. decorus
It's worth a try; if any fish is capable of recovering from "nitrate poisoning" I suspect catfish would be most likely to do so. They are the most resilient family I've encountered...

Re: S. multi's fighting?
I don't know whether they did the damage between themselves or other species are to blame. I've only had them for a week, and that's how they looked when I picked them up. I have seen that they are quite active and interactive among themselves, but there doesn't appear to be any conflict between ...

S. multi's fighting?
I recently picked up 2 pairs of adult S. multi's. They all seem to have some patches of hide missing, with one that has a really tender-looking (pink) patch across the back directly behind the dorsal fin. The last time I saw fish this badly chewed up was when some Malawi mouthbrooders were spawning ...

Re: Mopani Driftwood?
Driftwood is widely available on the internet, particularly on e-bay. Apparently there are plenty of folks who collect it from various lakes and rivers, hoping to make a few $$ selling it online. Naturally, no clue what sort of tree any of it's from. There's also plenty to be found along the banks ...

Re: Mopani Driftwood?
There is plenty of softer wood available locally, but apple and cherry driftwood? For that matter, how would you determine what kind of driftwood you have? (Aside from mopani, locally collected or bought online?) Or can dead wood simply be soaked until it sinks for the fish to gnaw on? I don't ...

Mopani Driftwood?
Simply, is it suitable for gnawing on by the "aquatic termite" species, or is it too hard to be useful to them? Is there any particular type of wood that is better/best for that purpose?

Filtration isn't an issue on the 75, I have a couple of old aquaclear 500's that can be used.

Re: L204, what's necessary (or not) for spawniing?
I'm looking to get 5"+ fish from an online pleco dealer. Hopefully they'll be properly sexed, and I won't have to wait several years for them to mature.

L204, what's necessary (or not) for spawniing?
This will be my first attempt at spawning anything other than livebearers or cichlids, so I figured a species that isn't particular about water chemistry in general would be a good start. The fact that the male is very protective of the eggs doesn't strike me as a bad thing either. So what have you ...

Not a redtail, eyes were smaller and the head wasn't quite as flat. The redtails eyes are set higher/flatter in the pic of the juvie. The general body shape was similar though, long and slender.

Unfortunately, I don't have a pic, was just at an lfs and saw something listed as an "Asian catfish" for $13.99. It was about 3" long, somewhat similar in shape and color to a channel cat, but with long barbels more like a Pimoledus. Can anyone point me toward pics of something similar to this ...

Figure 12-18 months before they'll grow large enough to spawn. I learned the hard way to keep the tank well-covered if you use hob filters. They like to swim up the outflow, and are liable to miss the tank on the return trip. Finally finding one dried out on the cover glass solved the mystery of the ...

If the baby multi's made it this far on their own, they should be alright in the main tank, Their spines are good defense against most would-be predators, though I did once have an ornate bicher that chowed down several juvie S. eupterus, one went down tail-first.
