Dont do 50% water change thats to much.(big shock on bio)
I would do 25% every 2 days till NitrAtes under 40mg/L then gradualy work out the amount of water needed to change every week to keep the level under 20mg/L.

A diatom filter may help lower the amount of algae you have.
Get a NitrAte test kit ,
I found the common(Pterygoplichthys pardalis) one of the better algae eaters if not over feed.
Also the Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus is very good, I have 1 that keeps a 55G aquarium clean all by himself.

The problem comes when the wholesaler has treated the fish for worms and then even the LFS do like wise, and after that you do.

Well if we knew the answer to that we would be able to comprehend a lot of other peoples actions in the world. Most hybrid fish are breed for eating, sports and looks, in this case all I can think of is there the ones that didn't turn out right. Although another thought is these "Hybrids" seen a lot ...

Be very careful if you handel them as there dorsal and pectoral fins can cut soft skin very easy.

He/She may even chatter while out of the water if you're lucky. 8)

Yes its a pain, but you must turn off all electrical appliances that are in the tank (not external filters)before putting hands in.

Just a safety point from someone who has learnt the hard way..

I wouldent worry about it m8.
The larvae will take so long to hatch, they will more like become someones dinner while there at the surface hatching.

Malachite green when used on juveniles can have this effect.
But there is lateral line erosion so lack of nutrients may well be the cause
Try feeding bloodworms every so oftern as this is more like there stapel diet.
