Panaqolus sp. "L397" Spawning Footage
Hello folks, I am back again with some pleco p0rn :)) X9AB14OOe3U Watch and enjoy. Feel free to share the link with other hobbyists. Again, I'd like to emphasize that the female is actually forcing it's way into the males cave at the beginning. There is evidently no "trapping" going on. The female ...

Re: Feeding Repashy
No, I did not feed it for most of the summer time. I don't want them to get too fat. It's best to give them some time with lots of veggies and less protein based foods. I think you can use most Pleco foods from the big suppliers for this period. Just don't feed too much to your adults. Youngsters on ...

Re: Feeding Repashy
Well at least I feed it for 2-3 days untill it is gone. Depends on my mood whether I am up to make it every third day all over, again. So they get some breaks in between. I feed it mostly when I want them to spawn, or rather when I expect them to spawn again soon. Like now, when winter and rainy ...

Re: L168 Sexing delemma with update!!!
Jess, I did never witness my L168 spawn (only ever had 1 spawn). But I found the word trapping being mostly missleading. I think it's more often the male refusing to let the female in than the female actually not willing to spawn and therefore being trapped by the male forcefully. It's especially ...

Re: Feeding Repashy
I take an old big tea cup with hot water and boil it in the microwave. Then add the powder and stir well using a spoon. Once hardened, I will feed it using a spoon to make portions of what I assume would be appropriate for the tank. One tea cup usually is enough for two or sometimes three days. That ...

Hey Tom, the picture really makes it look horrible. I hope it is in better condition than the picture suggests.
I think we need a better picture for now.

Re: Sexing L-14
Head looks not pronounced enough to be male for me. Body looks round, too. The interopercularodontodes are a little in between. If this is a big specimen of 10 inches or more I would say female. If it is still smaller, it might just grow a more angular / edged head and be a nice male though.

Re: Treatment for Fish Lice That's Safe For Scaleless Fish?
JBL Aradol Plus 250 works good against argulus. As always I don't know if it is available in the US. It's based on Diflubenzuron . It stops the argulus from growing new "skin" so they die during molting. Also affects shrimps and other crustaceans. Snails showed no signs of problem though. And it is ...

Re: L200 hemi/bary
Basically, your cave should be a little longer than the male at least. If one fits, it is very likely two will fit, too ;) Some plecos prefer very narrow caves, others wider ones. It depends. Baryancistrus are some of the trickier to breed. You might look into some of the L177 spawns that are ...

my real Hypancistrus "Zombie" - returned from the dead
Here comes a story that is a little sad, a little happy, a little unbelieveable and yet very true. Yesterday I swapped some fishes between tanks. Mostly because the L183 tank seemed to be a major letdown. PH just never went below 7, even though the water was super soft and KH was below 1°. I tried ...

Re: H. inspector growth/fungus?
Marc, some months ago I found one of my L397 males with completely reduced interopercular odontodes. All that was left was a white stump. Reminds me pretty much of what your fish shows there. Though I did not see the early stages (he is a real cave dweller). He was perfectly healthy otherwise and ...

There seems to be an inconsistency about the fins. Like a natural variation within the species. That's why you should rely on the mouth.Chris helland wrote: ↑23 Mar 2019, 16:41 So ive bin told, but then ppl keep telling me that the fins need to connect which they dont.

Hey, best way to make the distinctioin is to look at the mouth when its attached to glas. Lowfin - Hemiancistrus http://www.l-welse.com/gallery/files/9/1/3/l_welse_com_l_200_17cm_600.jpg Hifin - Baryancistrus http://www.l-welse.com/gallery/files/9/1/3/l_200_hifin_bild03_600.jpg Source: l-welse.com

Re: Breeding large plecos
I would think using nonburned clay/loam/silt would be the best option to provide a digging ground for plecos. Filtration will be another challange, though muddy water might not be a real problem for the fish, right?

Hello,
the reason why there are no reports is that there have been no recorded spawnings on L27 and L95.
Cheers

You might want to provide a picture of your tank. What is the water volume? How many L134 do you keep in there?

Haha, after looking at him in my tank I came across the idea that he looked like stardust, googled "ancistrus stardust" and came up with Ancistrus sp(l100) . And the spots seem to be pretty "spot on". (pun intended). Not sure if the caudal fits, though :/ Could use some better pictures of L100.

Ancistrus sp. (L107) lookalike?
Hey everyone, I bought a group of Ancistrus sp(l107) about a year ago. They were really small back then and had quite some variation in size and pattern. First of all, I have my doubts about the source of the fish, since he said he had them from a friend and I couldn't see the parents and he also ...

Yes keep it up.
I was so close to buying a Vectron Energy MultiPlus (Inverter+Charger+Auto/On/Off) before and might now just go for it. Had a devastating 8hours power outage some years ago and am still very afraid of it happening again.

Nice to see many striving fry
How are they doing now?
82°F is still pretty low temperature for it's habitat. Wouldn't expect that to be a major problem. If you had enough successfull spawns at this temperature I would love to see a control experiment on higher temps again.

Marc,
if you keep experiencing dropped eggs, I would strongly consider dropping the male
Move him to a different home and see if one of the remaining males will fare bettter.
(And when I say different home I mean a different Tank in your fishroom)

Re: L168 Sexing delemma
My experience with this species is, that both genders will develope strong odontodes. I tend to look at the ventral fins for sexing these. Males will have way longer ventral fins than females have, when ready to breed. Pictures are from: https://www.suedamerikafans.de/en/wels-datenbank/welsart/?art ...
