Colombian Pleco ID
Which Colombian plecos are these? All of them are about 2 inches long on these photos. They are all wild caught from Colombia. No idea which body of water. Long fin ancistrus pleco: Homozygous lethal?
The long fin mutation in the common bushy nose ancistrus pleco is an autosomal dominant mutation. This means that if a pleco carries the long fin mutation (heterozygous for long fin), then it will have long fins. Conversely, if the pleco only has short fins, then there is absolutely no way it is ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
I was at Petco today and they had albino plecos that are snow white (not yellow). I would have purchased some but I have my hands full at the moment. My yellow albino long finned plecos spawned 3 weeks ago and I have about 80 fry at the moment. Perhaps the next generation I'll try to cross the ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
I have a lot of extra caves in my tank and mostly just the males use them. Females don't seem to sleep inside caves even when the cave is empty. On rare occasions I have seen females alone inside a cave but in general I get the sense that the females don't use caves as sleeping quarters unless there ...

A replied a few days ago but for some reason my reply disappeared. Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear about your white albino. Maybe the cave was too small and she could not escape from the male. Hopefully you can find them again at your local fish store.

Yes, when I google "albino longfin aeneus" all the images are for peppered cory long fin. I know because they look like my albino longfin peppered and different from the fins of the longfin bronze that I see everywhere including the ones that I own. Your female white looks very healthy. I've been ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
The problem with that method is that it requires more generations, thus more time. Each generation is a 6 months delay in terms of waiting for growth to puberty and maturity. With my colony of 30 AaLl fish, assuming 50% are female and 50% male, and each female lays 30-50 eggs per month, I am looking ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
I got my plecos from different vendors on Aquabid. All are long fin albino. I got some when they were only 1.25 inch (~2.5 months old) and they arrived white but eventually became yellow by the time they were 2 inches (5 to 6 months old). It is possible that they were white upon arrival because they ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
My white albinos turned yellow very early, at around 2 inches in length (including tail). Sometimes they go back to being white when they get scared. For example, when catching them or removing their caves for cleaning. Petsmart and Petco source their fish from a California importer. I'm guessing ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
Thanks for sharing this Eric. It's really interesting that your white albino has stayed white. All my white albinos eventually became yellow albino. You should try to selectively breed that white one. Try to find a white male from the same fish store so that the genetics will not be contaminated. If ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
Just to clarify things I was talking about breeding a true Albino w/ Pink Eyes to another true Albino w/ Pink Eyes, they produced half brown and half albino off spring. Yup. And the punnet squares we made are also for that situation. we wouldn't be able to tell which gene was homozygous and which ...

Re: Just a hobby or a field of study?
It's REALLY hard to go back to school if you are relying on your full time job to pay for the roof over your head and have hungry mouths to feed. Schooling is best done early before life gets in the way of your dreams. Just something to consider.

If you enjoy your job, you will never have to work a day in your life. Find a role model to shadow. If you can't see yourself in their shoes for the next 20-30 years then you should look elsewhere. Don't make the mistake of investing time and money when you are totally unfamiliar with the final ...

Check out the marina hang on breeder refugium boxes, use them for all my egg layers, love them! I own that device but I am afraid the fry will escape back into the main tank at the water output site. The Cory fry are bottom dwellers so it might work better than for other types of fry. Cut a piece ...

Re: Help With Eggs
I just realized what's been happening, I'm an idiot. I've been finding tons of small black fish in the breeder net but since I have guppy fry in the same tank I always assumed that's what they were so I'd take them out of the net and put them into the main tank then they'd die. Apparently they have ...

By the way, Cory lay eggs every 30 days even if there is no male. Assuming they are in good health and not stressed or harassed by tank mates.

Re: Help With Eggs
White ones are dead (unfertilized). Brown ones should hatch in 3 days. Maybe they are hatching and you are discarding the tiny fry. After the eggs hatch they look the same. The empty egg shells look like the eggs. The babies are tiny, 2x size of baby brine shrimp, maybe 1/2 millimeter. Also the fry ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
There are at least two albino BN genes, both of which have yellow bodies. I do not know if there is a third albino gene with snow white body and pink eyes. There is definitely another mutation with yellow body and black eyes. All the red eyed snow white bodies I have purchased from 6 sources turned ...

Wow, that's a really nice Cory. Are you trying to breed it? In the USA we have a web site called AquaBid which is ebay for fish and all of the L144 from different vendors look nothing alike. I must have come across 10 or more "L144" varieties in the past year. The only thing that they all have in ...

Thanks again !! A pic of my Peppered Cory Nice cory. Does that cory have black or red eyes? Also, is that cory yellow or white bodied in real life? Lighting can make white fish look yellow. Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
Andy, to my knowledge two albinos (recessive gen) never can have brown fry. That is incorrect. A red eyed white albino male and a red eyed white albino female may in fact produce 100% normal brown fry, if the two albinos are from different "clans", with each clan carrying an albino gene in a ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
If you bred a Blue Eyed Leucistic BN X with a Albino Pink Eyed BN, you should get all brown BN fry from that breeding. Shouldn't You? Ron :YMSIGH: Correct. But this assumes that your breeding stock has that exact genotype. In reality it is possible that your blue eyed leucystic bn might be a ...

Re: Ancistrus sp. Albino X Albino Equals what?
The answer to the OP's question has been known for decades. The reason is that bristle nose plecos have TWO different albino genes, both of which are recessive for albino. If your albino male and albino female happen to each be homozygous albino for different genes, then 100% of the offspring would ...

Thanks for all the tips and advice. I really don't understand whats happening to my L144. I don't think its a matter of competition with the albinos because I always leave more pieces of food than there are fish. In this tank of 12 plecos (no other fish), I always put in at least 20 pieces of ...

Thanks for all the tips. I will try adding cut shrimp and carnivore pellets. Raw shrimp right? Not boiled shrimp?
How many hours do you leave the cut shrimp in the tank? Some people use raw shrimp to fishless cycle new tanks so I'm guessing raw shrimp generate a lot of ammonia...
