Distribution of Tachysurus truncatus (+ others)
Tachysurus truncatus is listed in the Cat-E-Log as being distributed in "South and southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand." The species was described from a locality in China, so this distribution is at least incomplete, but I am pretty certain they have not been recorded in any ...

Re: Hypogean Rhamdia in Costa Rica
I mentioned this to a few people at Catcon, but Jairo Arroyave (first author here) visited us at the museum this semester and he and I chatted about Catcon and similar events. He wanted me to pass along that he would love to be invited to speak at hobby events like that. He is not a hobbyist himself ...

Re: Catcon 2024
Did they announce a location and/or date for the next CatCon? I've heard rumor, but I'd rather not repeat it in case it's false. Cheers, Eric Nothing was officially announced, unless I missed it. There was a lot of talk that there will almost certainly (but not 100% definitely) be another Catcon ...

Re: Disruptive ads?
Hi Jools, So sorry to bring this up then disappear. I should have included in the first post that I typically pull up PC on my phone browser, so that's where I'm seeing all this. I've played with the typing issue some more. I think there is a delay in the loading of the ads, so every time a new one ...

Re: Catcon 2024
Catcon was great, so glad TFCB took it on. It was great to see everyone there (and meet some more PC people in person).
Nothing beats hanging out with catfish people. Hopefully I'll see you all again at future Catcons () and maybe some other events.

Disruptive ads?
Hi Jools (+ anyone else who weighs in), I don't know how often you browse the site with ads, but they've become pretty disruptive and sometimes a bit inappropriate (big images that were clearly intended to seem sexual at a glance). I've seen admins of other sites with seemingly similar ad systems ...

Re: Aquarium Basics or Advanced Information
Have you gotten to browse through the articles in Shane's World ? There are some in the Catfishology section that cover some of these topics. To me, this being more of a specialist website, too much space dedicated to information for beginner hobbysits would feel a little out of place. I would argue ...

Reviving an old thread because I am slowly trapping these guys in preparation for our next move (4th time moving this tank, this time from TX to LA), and I remembered I had noted that they had exceeded the max size listed in their Cat-E-Log page. They've done it again. My little ladies are huge ...

Re: Representing Planet Catfish while I...
I originally didn't attach my images in my post about visiting ANSP (whoops) and where I hosted them apparently doesn't host them long term. I seem to have hit a cap for the number of images I could put in the ANSP post, so here's the ones that went missing: ...visit the research collection at the ...

A different collection with possibly just as many bagrids. Jools may recognize the catfish prints. Those are originals from Bleeker’s Atlas Ichthyologique. Re: A life update?
I think I'm overdue for an update to this thread. π€ Things didn't work out with the lab I started my PhD in. The person I was working with turned out to be a poor fit for me. For a little while now I've been in another lab, taking a short detour working on Poeciliids. I joined my new lab knowing fr ...

Re: Should Olyra be in its own family? Molecular phylogenetics of ornamental catfishes of North East India
To answer the title question: Based on this study? No. It is all based on a single mitochondrial gene (COI) and support values for the ( Clarias magur + Olyra longicaudata ) clade are consistently low (0.584 or lower). Previous molecular work has placed Olyra nested within the Bagridae. Sullivan ...

Re: Best websites to get comprehensive data on museum inventory?
VertNet, iDigBio, and FishNet2 (last seems least popular/updated) are widely used databases cataloging specimens in museum collections. The records there should generally include collection site information. How well populated these databases are depends on individual institutions digitizing their ...

That said, bunocephalus minerim and bunocephalus larai are that size, but I don't understand a lot of the anatomy talk in the chart. Epiphysial bar? Scapulo-coracoid? Most of the anatomical terms in the key are features of the skeleton. Cardoso, the author of the dissertation this key is from, was ...

Re: Synodontis nigriventris in a bad state
I would disagree with adding further medications without fully diagnosing the root issue. In my opinion your choice of medication was appropriate. I would have called this ich, and the medications I've used successfully to treat ich in catfishes in the past also contained malachite green (viride ...

Reviving an aquarium club?
Hello all, I am a member of the aquarium club at the school where I'm working on my PhD. This is an official school endorsed club, not a typical local aquarium club, so it has a few odd rules to work around. The undergrads running the club wanted to try to get it to be more like a real aquarium club ...

Re: Another impulse purchase: a lone Asian bumblebee cat
Not something I'm working on with Kevin, is it? Yes, one of the two is. - They are super efficient egg eaters. I think several egg scattering catfishes spawn more often than we know but the chances of egg/fry survival with the parents is very, very low. Do you think Pseudomystus are egg scatterers ...

Experiments ...
