Glass Catfish

One of my 9 Glass Catfish looks fine to me but is swimming in circles. Do they tolerate salt well, or medications? I have him in a 2g hospital tank with filter, heater and aeration. He is now sometimes lying on his side, but was flashing at one point. I see no visible signs of parasites. Ammonia: 0 ...

How are your glass cats doing? Where are the eggs located? Besides the eggs, is there a way to tell female from male?

I've seen some evidence of spawning activity but have assumed that the eggs were eaten either by the parents or the ghost shrimp in the tank.

That's pretty fascinating about the cedar natebug... I imagine I'm lucky that the catfish didn't suffer any ill effects...

Bronzefry, thanks for the tips. They sound a lot easier than the methods I tried! Good driftwood appears to be difficult to come by...

The driftwood did float, but I managed to secure it with plastic tie-wraps to a piece of slate, and all was well. However a month or two ago it started disintegrating into tiny splinters and had to be removed. I was really surprised as initially it had the density of rock, but there you go... I ...

I was really happy with the way the tank turned out and that the 9 glass cats seem comfortable. I didn't have much luck with the plants I tried, and ended up with plastic. The cats are only a little shy. With the tank light on they shoal closely but with indirect lighting they tend to swim about a ...

Antti~ Thank you! It's the lighting, then, that gives them the *glow*... the ones in the first tank, the light is from *above*, and in the QT the light comes in from the side. I don't use any tank bulbs as they don't seem to like that. At night I turn on lamps in the room. I'm trying to figure out ...

In my Quarantine Tank, the glass catfish look iridescent, like rainbows... half of the bottom is uncovered glass, and there is a mirror about 2 feet away. Is there some way I can recreate that in the new tank? The existing tank has black gravel and indirect sunlight, and while the fish look ...

I boiled my driftwood! I used a *corn pot* (large white kettle) and set it on the extra burner on the BBQ. I boiled one end, turned it over and boiled the other end, then repeated with new water. I hope twice is enough? I haven't put it in the tank yet; any hints on how to secure it? Will the ...

trevray~ Thank you for helping me... I've had other fish in the 20h and have always wondered why I need to do extra water changes to keep the nitrates down. It has a Penguin 330 with 2 bio-wheels and luckily there hasn't been a problem with ammonia or nitrites, but now I understand why it is ...

driftwood

I found a nice piece of cedar driftwood on a saltwater beach and have had it soaking for a week and a half. I've been scrubbing it with a clean toothbrush, and the tannin leaching from it seems to be diminishing. I did a search and read most of the posts about driftwood on the site. From what I ...

Silurus~ Thank you! I really didn't want to take up their swimming space with a pot. Last night I floated a long piece of pothos near the top, and this morning all three were hanging out in there, looking happy, and I was happy that I could see them. Before, they were hugging the substrate for ...

I live in the Pacific NW near Puget Sound... I brought home three glass catfish because they were so different and cool looking. glass catfish decor

I have three 2" glass catfish that first lived in a flower pot in a 50g community tank. They outgrew the pot and in rearranging some tanks I gave them their own 10g, along with 2 otos. I'm trying to give them some privacy with plants, but I also want to be able to see them. Does anyone have any ...
