Re: What is it? Ageneiosus?
Thanks anyway. It's always risky to try to make a definitive ID from just a photo.

Thanks for the link but I don't think that is what it is. It has a fairly deeply forked tail, much more so than the one you linked to.

Re: Is this Sorubimichthys planiceps?
I took these pictures in Peru last summer. I hosted them on Flickr, I don't know why they are such low resolution here, they're actually very high resolution in their original form. I sort of know what the IDs are, I just wanted a second opinion on these pictures that I posted; so I won't be ...

Re: Which Corydoras?
Thanks Karsten. As far as the green, every catfish I saw being caught in the Itaya that day had that green sheen to it. At first I thought it had something to do with what they were eating but then somebody suggested to me that it might be a commensal organism such as what colors gold tetras. I don ...

Is this Sorubimichthys planiceps?
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3845/14611967537_5698822974.jpg It looks like nothing more nor less than a tiger shovelnose head grafted on to the body of a lima shovelnose. At first I thought this was the strangest looking tiger shovelnose I ever saw. It wasn't until about a half hour later that I ...

Re: New Giraffe owner
ok, well tbh this is way off what I was asking on the food front. suck eggs time: simple answer as to a bulk amount please, brand etc. Hikari for instance but in bulk. Sorry about that. Both my college education in fish nutrition and my experience keeping them says that you'll be fine with any ...

Re: New Giraffe owner
You write as if fish nutrition was the same as human nutrition and it isn't; not by a long shot. While I do agree troud feed is better avoided, the reasons are a bit different TRout are bred for consumption. Just as other animals, whoever breeds fish to be eaten wants them to grow quickly, and quick ...

Re: New Giraffe owner
I can't find the references right now to support the assertion (we covered it in fish nutrition class in college) but it is a mistake to feed foods formulated for feeding colder water fishes (koi/pond pellets or even worse trout pellets) to fish kept in tropical waters. This is because those foods ...

Re: World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
I personally have not seen any syno this size either...I was thinking of arapaimag as well, on his MyCats list the biggest of the Mochokidae that he shows I imagine is the 25 yr old Synodontis budgetti Thanks for that, as S. budgetti might be the identity of the largest Synodontis I had ever seen ...

Re: World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
Do you think he is doing ok or he needs/would benefit a bigger tank? Yeah, I am quite curious to see if anyone else comes out. I'd thoroughy enjoy if people started posting big syno pics here too :) I don't mean 1' euptera but rare and special lunkers like yours :) I always think all fish would ...

T: The tank in the video is a 125 (6' long) the fish with it are some misc. Mbuna cichlids at various stages of maturity but also some Nibochromis venusta which are are 6-7". VJ: 125 long is 6' long and 17" wide on the inside. Is your syno having problems swimming and turning around? I got to ...

Re: World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
Nice video of the acanthomias. I really couldn't tell how large it is. If it is 20 inches that's impressive. I purchased one last year, it was mixed up with some longirostris which I brought home as well. My acanthomias is now about 12 inches in length. I am keeping it in a tank with some small ...

Re: World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
I wrote before over 8 years old but then I got to thinking that this is 2013 isn't it (Tempus fugit)? So I had to think back to when I got it, seems that it was around fall of 2003 so that means I've had it more like 9 years.Birger wrote:That is a good size then, how long have you had it?

Re: World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
Give it time, I have no doubt your acanthomias will get big but to me it looks like it is just starting to mature. I have seen pictures of others that came in to North America in the last year and they all seem to be developing about the same, could be interesting in the future. Maybe we will hear ...

Re: World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
Welcome to the Planet. Nice looking syno you got there! I have not found a number for your fish anywhere: do you have a number? Yes, that is a metric ruler on that pic of ~1' long Synodontis acanthomias . The max size is ~20" SL (note, not TL). If you provide a picture of your fish next to a ruler ...

World's Largest Synodontis Catfish in Captivity
Well yeah maybe it's just a joke but I don't have any evidence to suggest otherwise concerning my Synodontis acanthomias. I think mine is bigger than any of the ones pictured on the species page here including the one pictured from the fish market in Kisanghani. If that ruler in the picture is ...
