Aussie fish
The sp that has been most commonly available here is Tandanus tandanus, he's lovely with beautiful soulful eyes but gets too big too fast and then what to do with him? He's very tasty but not after you have been talking to him! Recently Neosilurus hyrtlii have been about in the trade, and as these ...

Deformed Cory fry
Hope this isn't getting off the subject, but I was interested in what was said about Melatonin production in Corys. I have recently raised my first batch of C. paleatus and one of them is quite dark, though from grey parents. He is a cute little fella with his pale eyes, but has not grown well and ...

Barbie's right, the sun is lower in the sky in autumn/winter and that's when I have had problems with light coming in windows. I think if you cut the tank light back a few hours per day the algae will clear at some point. If you want to do it fast watch out for algae death causing fish death like ...

Plants and gravel
If you are hitting the stems of the plants then you are probably disturbing the roots too, or preventing new roots getting established. Where you have roots you shouldn't need to vac as the roots are doing it for you by removing dissolved substances for the use of the plant. I am a gardener at heart ...

Driftwood Cat
Thanks Guys, Once I saw a picture all was clear, he was definitely some sp of Parauchenipterus (couldn't get the photos up on the others and the dorsal was far too high on the Zamora Woodcat). The bad news is that when I called in to see him yesterday he had died. What a waste after all that travel ...

Driftwood Catfish?
My lfs recently got in a "Driftwood Catfish". They are eternally busy with other furry pets etc so I haven't been able to learn even its latin name. It is about 14cm, thickset and of a dark mottled chocolatey brown, square tail, very appealing. When I next went to visit it, it had most unfortunately ...

Lonely Hoplos
If I had mains power there would be no stopping me.
I had a biggish male Hoplo first, then got a half size which turned out to be female. He bossed her around a bit at first but then all settled down and they became firm friends.

Hoplos
My male got his orange fin edges (and his fins got proportionately longer) when he was about 3" long which happened in summer. Now it is winter and he's back to brown.

Hoplo
From what I can gather the Port Hoplo (now a Megalechis?) is the one that takes the lowest temperatures, at least of the ones we cxan get here. I have had one living with my Black Moor Snowy for a year now and he is a lovely fish who quickly learnt to take food from my fingers. They live with White ...

Car Sick Corys
I routinely bring fish on 45minutes of windy road, some dirt and bumpy (carefully cradled the dear things) and sometimes for up to 6 hrs with above drive at end, sometimes with oxygen, sometimes without and I have never seen this.
Can oxygen hurt air gulpers?

Cool temp Corys
I keep C. aeneus, paleatus, arcuatus, schwartzii and ambiacus unheated here. The temp goes down to 18C most winters but only at night. Conversely the summer daytime temps can get as hot as Caboolture, so the fishfan there shouldn't need to miss out on these. Can C. sterbai take lower temps? I haven ...

Mine stand on their ventrals and tails like MC's et al. I have only seen arcuatus and schwartzi doing it and they look to me like little Kangaroos. Ultra cute.
Fiskars stand on their ventrals and whiskers. What does it mean? Are they trying to tell him something?

Feeding Hoplos
My Hoplo (now a Megalechis I guess) thoracatum eats Hikari Tropical Sinking Wafers at a single gulp. Like the man says they eat many things at a single gulp, often. My Corys perversely prefer the old Wardly's Shrimp Pellets. They get lots of frozen/live stuff too. Hikari can be got in Sydney or by ...

I'm pleased to hear about the toughness of sterbais as they are next on my list for a new tank. I keep non heated tanks in a "sub-tropical" climate but with cold nights, so my fish have to cope with day and seasonal temp variations not seen in the usual run of aquaria. (Lots of you guys would cringe ...

I'm not going to be much help as I have been hoping that someone else would answer this one. I have had the same thing happen and I think what has initially triggered it for me is chasing them with a net for tank change or big cleanup. I could not believe how difficult they were to catch the first ...

Hello Catfishers
I'm from rural Australia and keep fish without the benefit of mains power - sort of low input fishkeeping. Sounds messy doesn't it, but is mostly successful and just as brilliant to look at and happy fish. I have coolwater tough fish able to tolerate temp fluctuations and run filters and lights at ...

Anodontiglanis dahli
I'm from Aust so I looked it up in my trusty Field Guide which shows it to be from coastal northernmost Australia, not particularly abundant and rather cute. The Remarks section says that it is typically solitary and feeds by thrusting its head into the sandy bottom for insect larvae, detritus ...
