oscars are messy for the folloowing reasons:

chew up and spit out food poluting the tank
generate vast amounts of waste ammonia etc
dig in the substrate and stir up debris.
and yes a cheap filter will get blocked.
high quality external power filters the way to go.

Oscars are not as agressive as many people think. yes the will push tank mates around but can easily end up on the loosing side of a fight. if you got a small oscar, it probably would be ok but as the shark cats grow rapidly and they would be a bit ahead of the oscar. Hi, thanks for all the advice. i went and purchased a little royal panaque today and it seems to be settling in quite well. i have put some bog wood in and a few plants that it can eat, in the shop they appeared to be enjoying bloodworms so i might put some in as a protein boost for its diet.

they will start off in 3ft tank with some other fish, and i will move them into a 6ft tank when there big enough to cope with the other occupants

how much bog wood will the eat??

If they are channel catfish i would encourage you to put them back where you got them from as long as they have not come into contact with any other exotic species..

channl catfish are not easy to manage in captivity as they grow huge and eat absolutley everything.

its definitely a shovelnose cos of the body shape i think it is a hemisoribum, soribum or a pseudoplatystoma species

hi im interested in the marble shovelnose catfish, does anyone have any experince of them and the best way to keep them.
the tank that fish will go in is 8ftx2ftx3ft it is 3 ft wide due to the fact that it used to house a mystus wykii.

i have kept these fish and they do indeed get large they can attain large sizes in captivity mine grew to around 16+" and they lived in a large holding vat rather than a tank. they will crash around in a tank and injure themselves they are real pigs when they eat as well and a good filtration system ...

what would be a suitible companion for my catfish

the tank is 4ftx2ftx2ft.
it has one syno eurupterus at 8 inches and one sailfing gibbiceps at 14 or so inches long and a golden gourami.
Ph is 7.2 and water is quite hard.
i just wondered what you kept with your cats any advice ideas would be great.

hi
my sailfin has attacked my featherfin syno and left i with a large wound in its head. they have now been separated. has anyone else had this problem should i get rid of one of the catfish or shall i put them back in the same tank.

I also believe that these fish maybe the same species although my lfs has two catfish at around 20" they call perruno they have similar markings to the picture at the bottom of your original post.
i have never seen jevinile perruno only l. mamoratus and i think that your fish is mamoratus.

i definatley wouldnt put anything in with your wykii. in my experience they will shred anything kept with them and i have a collegue who has one and it has already bitten him badly and it killed the giant gourmai it had in the tank which was considerably larger than the cat at the time.
