Re: bristlenose in a 30 gallon

Realistically, as long as there are enough caves/territories for the males to not fight, and filtration/water changes are kept up with, your real limiting factor is the fish themselves. I'd say you could easily keep 2 (maybe even 3) trios as long as you create ample amounts of caves for the males. I ...

Re: Cocama!!! :D

Thank you so much for your reply. Good to hear from someone who has been successful with them at that temperature. My tank is at 78*F (formerly a pygmy cory species tank) and I was worried it would be a bit hot for them. Have you found them to be aggressive feeders like standard otos? Mine haven't ...

Cocama!!! :D

Today I went to one of my favorite local fish stores, a mom and pop outfit called the Planted Aquarium Store here in Fort Lauderdale. I was on the search for more aquarium moss to complete my moss wall for my 30gal oto/shrimp tank. When I got there I was informed that they were out of moss (should ...

Re: Permanent Dwarf cory breeding set up

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!! As the tank is a little larger I was thinking about adding a couple of other small species to it, Dicrossus Filamentosis and Otocinclus spring to mind - does anyone see these as a problem. I'd have to say a firm no to the Dicrossus but I see no reason at ...

Have they checked it out yet? It sometimes takes several hours and it normally only takes one curious one to get the others interested.

Re: Feeding Otocinclus

The food I make mine is very similar to the Soilent Green. I make it with spirulina powder, mashed peas and various other veggies like broccoli and zucchini then I mix the paste with boiled agarose to create the gel. As I am typing this, my shoal of about 25 strong is demolishing a piece the size of ...

Flicking behavior is totally normal on occasion. Fish get itchy too. And yes beige to brown is the normal background color for these fish.

Re: Feeding Otocinclus

In my experience, not even the least picky otos will bother with algae wafers. They prefer something softer like blanched veggies or various mashed peas/algae wafer pastes. They have much smaller, more delicate mouths than most other members of the suckermouth family and tend not to appreciate the ...

Re: DIY Food Recipes

Garlic is another ingredient I plan to include in my next batch. I am strongly considering melting down the batch in the freezer and adding more agar and garlic to it. I am really happy with the consistency of the paste I made with the given ingredients, what I'm not thrilled with is the firmness of ...

Hi guys, Since I am always on here looking for advice and ideas for myself I figured I would contribute a little tonight for a change and share with everyone a little project I did today with my spare 2 hours. I drew my inspiration from two places: James0816 got me thinking a few months ago with his ...

Re: Stocking Ideas

You could make one fantastic looking shrimp tank out of a 5gal. DIY CO2 is really only efficient in aquaria less then 20gal in size anyway so I wouldnt expect that to cause you any trouble. Before you do that though, make sure you have enough lighting...low lighting combined with high CO2 is asking ...

Re: Single Tank Breeding Project Ideas

In that case, do you think it would be a more practical idea to go with the Pseudomugil instead of the Iriatherina for purposes of being able to raise the fry?

Re: Single Tank Breeding Project Ideas

So in that case, what do you guys think about a trio of Pseudomugil gertrudae and a trio of Iriatherina werneri? Would that work, do you think? I must admit, I do really like the Iriatherina werneri but the gertrudae are definitely a very close second. If I had to pick one I would pick Iriatherina ...

Before even logging on to check what ideas anyone might have sent me today, I had done some of my own research. Single Tank Breeding Project Ideas

Until recently, I was using my heavily planted 30g long aquarium with a 10g sump to spawn otocinclus. I recently moved the oto shoal to a slightly smaller aquarium purely out of convenience and now I have a fishless yet beautifully planted aquarium with nothing but fire red and blue bee shrimps and ...

Re: Otocinclus Breeding

Its funny you bring the cocamas up, because I have very recently been contemplating buying a couple of them from thewetspot and attempting to keep them in the same 30gal long that I am using for my spawning group of vittatus. In there is a school of C pygmaeus (~20), a school of vittatus (~15) and ...

Re: Breeding Otocinclus

What a healthy looking baby you have there! I'm jealous. My "spawning" group spends wayyy more time eating their peas/carrots babyfood jello than getting down to business. I have 3 huge, hopefully gravid females though so I am remaining hopeful.

Crossing my fingers,

Re: mega clown w/white spot

The best way to go about it is to raise the temperature to about as high as they can handle (81*-83*F)for a week or two. It will speed up the life cycle of the organism and make treatment both more effective and quicker. QuickCure is pretty harsh, they would probably handle a bit of salt in the ...

Re: Breeding Otocinclus

That's a pretty awesome set up you have. Its interesting that both you and another member of this forum have noted that spawnings have occurred at a pH of around 7.5. I was always under the impression that lower pH was necessary. How do you prepare their peas for feeding? I mash mine up and mix it ...

Pictures!? Both of the fry and of the tank please. I'm attempting to spawn mine in a 30gal long heavily planted aquarium. Any pointers or anything as far as water params or foods? Ive seen several spawning embraces in my setup but none have produced eggs.

Re: Breeding Otocinclus cocama (+ spawning)

I noticed you have a powerhead in there beside the heater. Do the cocama prefer a significantly higher amount of water flow than the vittatus?
