Just as a follow up to my other question, I've managed to take some pictures as sick hoplo is out at the front of the tank for the first time in about a week, still not looking too clever or seeming to eat though :(
Here is sick hoplo in his current state. Although it can't be seen, his male ...

Re: Parasitic Worm affecting Megalechis thoracata
Thanks Richard B - I'm certainly learning a lot! I will keep on top of the tank cleaning and have had the filter outlets set to disrupt the surface of the water as much as possible, I'm also going to see if I can get an airstone tomorrow to help.

Re: Parasitic Worm affecting Megalechis thoracata
Perhaps that is it. I guess skittish behaviour, going off food and hiding all the time would all fit with that. My only reservation about that theory is I haven't seen the other hoplo bothering him at all.

Re: Parasitic Worm affecting Megalechis thoracata
Well at the risk of sounding (and being) rather silly, that does look like it JEK :ymblushing: I am really very embarrassed that this is something I did not learn about my fish. I think I'll spend the rest of the evening covering my bases with the other species I keep! I'm sorry to have wasted ...

Re: Parasitic Worm affecting Megalechis thoracata
Hi Mike_Noren, thanks for your reply. I read through your link about levamisole hydrochloride and had a look at the medicine I used which contains it, which is the Chanaverm. I checked the packaging and I have given an equivalent Levamisole dose rate of 2mg/l - which is in line with the veterinary ...

Parasitic Worm affecting Megalechis thoracata
Hello everyone, I'm hoping that you can all help me with a problem that has me at the end of my tether. Both of my Megalechis thoracata have what appears to be a parasitic worm protruding from the anus. The worms are white, on one hoplo it is protruding just under 1cm and on the other maybe 4mm. In ...

Re: Are you a GEEK ?
I think I'm a catfish geek-in-training. My work colleagues have an increasingly glassy eyed expression when I talk about my fish and my husband is nervous of going to fish shops at the weekend with me.

Re: Flatulence in C. paleatus
I'm no expert, but if she's stuck at the top of the tank and seems unbalanced, it sounds like she might have Swim Bladder Disease or gas in her gastrointestinal tract affecting her buoyancy. Neither are contagious so the other corys wouldn't be affected.

That looks really good, functional but very aesthetically pleasing at the same time It's got a bit of an "alien landscape" feel to it!

Re: Underwater photos from Mauritius
Nice pictures! It took me a second to spot the electric ray (I know, right in the middle of the picture ).
Did you take these scuba diving or snorkelling? I don't know how to scuba dive yet, but I was still amazed by how much I could see just snorkelling when last on holiday near a reef.

What an incredible garden (both in Summer and in Winter)! I'm more than a little jealous, I'm so hopeless with gardening I'd never manage to keep something so magnificent in such good order.
It's also lovely to see bird feeding stations

Thanks Jools, I found Outside Inside Aquatics on yell.com but hadn't gone to check it out yet, I'll definitely do so soon when they are open normal hours again. We managed to get parked just around the corner from Water Wonders but it is all pay & display unfortunately.

Thank you for the welcomes and for the advice, I will cycle the tank for as long as it takes before adding fish, I don't want to torture them while trying to get it right :(

what supplement? most supplements need some type of nutrient (fish and their waste, fish food, ammonia) to keep it alive) are you doing a fishless cycle or what?

Hello!
I'm a new member popping in to introduce myself. I'm Dee, I live just outside of Edinburgh in Scotland and I'm currently in the process of setting up my very first tank with the aim to keeping catfish. I've tried to make sure and do my research, I've bought and read a few different books and had a ...
