Re: Pond size for a channel?

Picked up another catfish(safety, plus this one is a fair bit larger at 6 inches). We have a small preform pond that the bigger one is now in(approx 120 gals). I sure hope the size difference is going to be resolved fair quickly though. i'm thinking of perhaps putting the big one into the big pond ...

Re: Pond size for a channel?

Ok, we got ahold of a lil bugger. Albino. About 3 inches. It is mighty cold out here so I plan on keeping him inside. Would a 5 gallon bucket of water changed 1-2 days be ok till March or so? Either that or a large sweaterbox(footprint of nearly 20 gal but less than a foot high) Any other ...

Re: bizzare smaller catfish that breed

what size tank would be appropriate for some brevispinis? How out and about are they? I have kept 1 noturus before...a tadpole madtom to be exact. He was a cutie. Breeding success seems pretty low though. May be all the pictures I find but it seems tadpole madtoms beet L. brevispinis in the cuteness ...

Re: bizzare smaller catfish that breed

On the other hand, where to acquire these less than common catfish? Phyllonemus seems somewhat common, Lophiobagrus(madtom that is easily bred in captivity?) less so.

Considered Microglanis also.

What tank size would be reccomended for these sp. ?

Re: bizzare smaller catfish that breed

Thanks guys for the info! Never new so many cats lived in tanganyika!

Hara is cool, but a bit tiny if anything! Are their any species of small predatory cats? Chaca seems to fit, though is not quite small enough and seems not commonly bred/available.

It seems P. typus could be the ticket.

bizzare smaller catfish that breed

Anyone have any ideas for catfish that matches this description?

Should be relatively small
weird shape(I really like the look of banjo/moth/etc.)
bred in captivity
relatively inexpensive and undemanding(a catfish that requires live food like blackworms is A-ok in my book though).

Thanks!

Thanks guys for the info. Now to track down one. I don't mind the fish in the pond gradually merging into one well supplied stomach...so long as it is an entertaining one and quickly grows too large and ornery to be egret takeout. My other thought for this pond was a bass but a catfish seems much ...

you could get into trouble though, if the school finds out. I can't see doing water changes either.

Also, is there any catfish species bigger than a channel that would work?

I doubt a blue would like this pond...since I heard they are river fish.

Are you serious? The ones I saw in the farm ponds looked massive, hard to believe 3 or 4 would be comfy in this pond. Are albinos hard to come by? Also, about how long would it take to raise one to about a foot?(I'm going to guess by this point they are more or less safe from the birds). I'd ...

Pond size for a channel?

I haven't been on here in ages, but recently hatched a little idea that might be worth trying. How big of a pond would, say, one channel catfish need? We have a backyard pond that is somewhere around 2000-3000 gallons. It currently houses only a few goldfish that we seldom see. The local birdlife ...

I really bummed in that that LFS is the only place in town that carries Bn's...and that I spent 11 dollars on this *female*!

Don't you just hate it when this happens?

well, For the past 2 weeks or so my adult male BN was hiding up in the corner behind the intake tube of the filter. His fins were a bit ragged. I thought he might have been sick or wanted more oxygen, due to the quickness that he returned when I flushed him out. Then, Yesterday the female Bn pleco ...

BN plecos don't eat infusoria, so they wouldn't benefit much from java moss. Adding a bit is okay, but not so much that its hard to keep track of them. With tank size into the picturer, I would laos add a large filter.

Any way to positively indentify S. nigriventis

Is there? Im kind unsure as I've seen some that look pretty close but they don't always swim upside down. In fact, the ones swimming in panic aroudn the tank were just as often right side up as upside down. They did have the counter shading though. Thanks! Also, what is a good price for small fish ...

BN pleco courting?

I've noticed some pretty odd interactions between my 2 BN plecos. When the female notices the male is near, she wll curve her body into an S, clamp her fins, and quiver and shake. Sometimes she moves towards the male, other times in a circle around him. She often backs into him, so that with each ...

I haven't seen them "flare" in any sense, but I have seen them "lock" the spines under there gills. Very aggravating when you are trying to remove them from a container with your hands.

BN pleco "itching" and breeding question

Well, I now think that the forward and backward motion my female BN pleco was doing is itching. It usually occurs in bouts between long periods of apparently perfect health. She'll perhaps shake her head once or twice, and then start "darting" around, spraying sand, detritus etc. in her path. Same ...

Sounds possible...as I noticed a jump in the MTs population. From barely unnoticeable to about 50!

Guess that pleco doesn't eat as much as I thought. I'll be sure to give the sand some cleaning soon.

I've seen that too, but he's going up and down with pretty exagerated movements. When he slides down, he isn't attached to the glass. Then he kinda swims up and tries to attach again. It kinda looks like he might be irritated by something. BTw, is it normal for thme to "flex" the cheek spines too? A ...

Okay, here's what info I can get you guys of the tank as of right now Size: 46 gallon bowfront tank Temp: Around 72 degrees Occupants: Right now, just one female bristlenose and 3 bluefin killies. The pleco has been here for around 4 weeks. However, I recently moved out around 20 juvenile swordtails ...

If you tried that combo, your collection of fish would merge into one well supplied stomach(the crayfish).
