Re: Ancistrus sexing
we've now taken the female out and put her in with the sturisoma. (They've stopped spawning now and we still have 20 juveniles to sell...)
I must have fertile water as we also have a cherry red shrimp population boom and I've noticed assassin snail eggs this morning!

I have a male crown tail betta in with polka dot loaches, BNs and swordtails - they all live happily together. I think a Betta would do fine, especially as you love them too. Best thing would be to try and buy a betta who is already sharing a tank with other fish - watch for a while to see how he ...

Re: Ancistrus fry in community tank
both parents are small, the male just about 3" and the female about 2"
I say 'about' 16 as they are quite hard to count (won't stay still) and the tank is heavily planted with a lot of hiding places. Nor can I see the back of the tank. I still don't think there's many more than 20 though.

hi - what do you mean by 'common whiptail'? we have a species tank and I'd be interested in taking your whiptail if it's a similar species.

well nitrate is ok, under 10, they were moved to the baby tank a while ago - so maybe different environment? If this is to do with the environment, will it go straight again?

two of the fry have developed crooked tails - one a slight kink, the other a big kink (pictured). Can anyone think of why this might be?

Re: Ancistrus fry in community tank
day 10 approx and the fry are coming out - they look mouth sized for our 3 big swordtails so we moved the swordtails to the sturisoma tank for a few days - though the fry seem quick enough to keep away from the big fish :-)

Re: Sturisoma had babies
well we finally moved the fry out into a 10g baby tank - mainly because their number was overloading the main tank. we counted 21 of 3 batches. The main tank still has 2 but we left them there.

Re: Ancistrus fry in community tank
I've read different accounts of the timing for the fry to come out of the cave, anything from 7 to 14 days - anyone with a time based on experience?
he is a good dad - we put his food under the centre and he's eating quite a bit - and he evicted the loaches lol (they're usually unafraid of anything)

Re: Sturisoma had babies
our adults won't eat live or frozen food but they love jbl pellets. So far the fry like to graze on veg that I put in.
In the UK these fish are around £30 each.
I agree with Larry (?) that they suck food rather than rasp, and they don't seem to rasp bogwood either.
I will be honestly pleased if ...

Re: Ancistrus fry in community tank
a mixed bag of replies - my swordtails have about 100 fry every month and they eat them all except maybe 3 or 4 (I allow this to happen or I couldn't cope with so many fry) so I do expect them to try and eat BN fry. My betta is fussier and only seems to eat frozen mosquito larva (I've never seen him ...

Re: Ancistrus fry in community tank

the shrimp were in the sturisoma tank - the noens were only there as a temp. measure to see if they'd eat the planaria. I guess the shrimp could have been hiding.
Do you know how old the fry would be before they're safe from the other fish?

Ancistrus fry in community tank
Soon I expect to have Ancistrus fry in my community tank. Working on the principle that most fish will eat anything live that fits into their mouth (right or wrong??), do you think any of these will pose a significant threat to my fry?

I put my neons in this tank, and I think they've eaten the shrimp, but also - no planaria - so a result of sorts. I guess I'll keep away from shrimp if they're bringing planaria. (they were 20p each so not too worried...)

hi Mats
well I don't use algae wafer right now as the snails devour them before the fish get a chance to even notice them, but I have been putting jbl pellets on the glass, hmmmm, source of protein... apart from that I just feed vegetables, no flake as it's sturisoma only tank (now with shrimp).

you'd have to define 'leftover food' Mats :-( [not as daft as it sounds....]
the fry are constant foragers and of course they are too small to eat much, so I might leave courgette in for a day and renew it at feeding time, so it's fresh food every day, but there's always food in the tank.
