I haven't been here for a while but this I want to share with you. While searching some pics I saw one of mine on this site: http://www.fishdata.info/p1103/Acanthodoras_cataphractus/product_info.html They must have found it in the cat-eLog. They have cut of the copymarks and placed their copymark on ...

Re: Wrong ID??

L144 in the cat-elog has 2 entries.

One is the true L144 and one is the xanthoristic form of the common Ancistrus. The last one is not the same as an albino! Take a look at the eyes.

Red eyes = albino

Black eyes = xanthoristic commom = false 144
or
= true L144 (very unlikely)

That sounds plausible, but then where are the true L144?

Re: Wrong ID??

L 144 is not a variant of the common ancistrus. A lot of people believe what is commonly sold as L144 is in fact a variant of the common Ancistrus. The existence of longfin "L144" points in that direction too. If it is/was a different species then at least a lot of hybridization was done.

Re: Wildcaught Ancistrus from Paraguay

I believe the original L144 was another species then the common Ancistrus and by crossbreeding the mutation was fixed in commons. It's also equally likely that the same or similar mutations will appear in different species. For instance, albino and leucistic individuals appear quite frequently in ...

Re: "Unscrupulous aquabid seller" continued

I want to invite the people who have a substantiated opinion about the origin of the L144 to have a look and eventually give their opinion in this topic:

Re: "Unscrupulous aquabid seller" continued

I only sequenced a regular bristlenose and a so called " L144 **" for mtDNA. They were exactly the same, with the most likely explanation being that the "black eyed yellow bristlenose" is simply a colour variety of the common bristlenose The only conclusion is that they must have a common female ...

Re: Which Auchenipterids are being kept by PC members?

Skoon platkopkes! Me and my family were somehow overwhelmed by the sheer size of these driftwoodcatfish when removing the lid of the bucket this afternoon. Then you should see my female Trachelyopterus galeatus :d My 5 year-old daughter called them "Hippofish". The mouth is pretty wide indeed ...

Re: Wildcaught Ancistrus from Paraguay

I do see similarities with the original L144 but I also see differences. The white tips on the tail is something we see in the original L144 and in false L144 but not in common albinos nor in superreds. However it is not clear in the pictures, it looks like my specimen does have some black ...

Re: Wildcaught Ancistrus from Paraguay

I have some Ancistrus "Rio Paraguay" by myself and these have a very different body shape. Body shape of this one was the same as the body shape of those who I believe are Ancistrus pirareta. I am quite sure he is the same species as the normal colored from the same batch as body shape and bristels ...

Wildcaught Ancistrus from Paraguay

Here the two first pics from one of my wildcaught Ancistrus. This one came in with some normal colored ones which could be Ancistrus pirareta . Unfortunately the baby's aren't his. http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7577/image00001rk.jpg http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/3787/image00002oh.jpg

Re: Baby ancistrus - a question

Ok, I thougt mum was dad and dad was mum. But obviously dad is a calico, just as the male who isn't dad.

So you have adult calico's and juveniles who look like calico's.

Re: Baby ancistrus - a question

Isn't mum a calico/false LDA16 bristelnose? That could explain the orange color on her tail. Better pics would be helpful.

The young fishes look like normal ones and calico ones.

Isn't it od that so little is know about genetics in one of the most commonly bred catfish?

Re: Olyramonster?

I think we should ID the fish. I have Olyra at work in a tank with small Puntius shuberti and I see no problems at all. Even a few Ancistrus and Amblyceps are fine.
