regarding "sterilising" the tank and equipment minus fish - just putin a cocktail of anti int and ext parasite meds at several times normal dose and drain after a week.

Lima sn seem to be always undersized on line and in books.
my two are 18 and 14 in total length ,add to this that they swim with barbels extended in front and you must treat them as a 24in fish.

if you can live with the "unnatural" ,i would suggest binding some large artificial plants to the roots with cable ties (cut off the exess tie length to prevent injury).
these will provide some extra shade without taking up much volume and can be blasted with a hose when dirty.

Regarding ph put some coral gravel in your filter to act as a buffer and always run water supply for a minute or so before ph test.

Have seen large group of GC's ranging from about 15 to 30 inches but in system around 10000ukgal.
I have one arround 25in that shares with perruno 28in, megladorus 24in down to pike ciclid around 8in ,there have been smaller fish, down to about 5in with no problems.

i have always been reluctant to use potatoe due to the starch, plecs tend towards green veg as a rule.
