Re: Brown Algae/Diatom consistent problem
I can't really change my water source. I use the local tap water. I'm going to heavily reduce lights, change the substrate to sand and introduce more anubias and ferns. I'll have to figure out a fast growing plant that can flourish in the same conditions.

Re: Brown Algae/Diatom consistent problem
So less light penetration = less chance of Algae growth?
Do you suggest I add more fast growing plants to do the tank to eat up the nutrients? In doing so is adding CO2 a must?

Re: Brown Algae/Diatom consistent problem
Thanks for the info. The BBA is all over the tank to be honest. I think so much that it's slowing down the filters. By bleaching the plants and adding small amounts of CO2, can I expect the problem to just go away?

Re: Brown Algae/Diatom consistent problem
My tank is about 2 years old, though I'm in the slow process of redesigning it. I currently have 10 colombian tetras and a royal, 2 L128 plecos. Here are two photos. I have java fern and anubias in there currently. I do not run CO2 Going to move from gravel to sand, add more anubias/java fern. Any ...

Brown Algae/Diatom consistent problem
Hi there, I've had the brown algae problem for awhile now and the increased lighting doesn't seem to help. 8-10 hours a day with a 48' dual HO T5 fixture is what I'm currently running with two 2217 Eheim's. What can I do to fix this problem? I'm feeding once every 4-5 days and my tank is currently ...

My tank is slightly understocked at the moment and I do not add anything to the water....not sure if this would affect the brown algae..

Re: Brown Algae outbreak due to filter changes?
Yeah this tank is well established and has been running for a long time. I recently added a large lighting fixture to it, but definitely have not been running it 10-12 hours. I've just got anubias and java fern at the moment.

Re: Brown Algae outbreak due to filter changes?
I currently run 2 eheim 2217 filters. On one of the filters I replaced the white pad, and added the black carbon pad + a new white pad on top of each other. While doing that I tried to introduce Java Moss to my aquarium, which didn't last and died off. Now there appears to be brown particles ...

Brown Algae outbreak due to filter changes?
Hey all, I recently added a new carbon pad/white pad on my Eheim 2217 along with trying to establish java moss and I havent run carbon for awhile. After doing so the water has gotten cloudy, the java moss has died and there seems to be "brown particles" flouting about the tank. I'm thinking its ...

Re: Aquarium lighting
Thank you for the information. MY head is spinning, but I take it my best options are the NO T5 or the HO T5...the difference between your two links being the latter, but also the fact that the HO T5 is elevated versus the NO T5 being a light strip placed firmly against the glass canopy. Is that ...

Reading about MTS, as long as there isnt overfeeding, they wont survive and break out. They're a good problem to have in my opinion. The diatoms have seemingly gone away for good, thank you for all the help guys.

I can do that. So a sand substrate will work fine for corys/plecos and snails? Sand wont trap as much ammonia right?

I would love to try and change up the substrate, but it would be a massive pain in the ass, even though I have a thin substrate as it is....maybe when I set up the aquascape I can try and change it...

Re: Brown Algae?
My tank is established, and recently had the outbreak which I think was due to the lighting being BAD. I replaced my bulbs and things have gotten better. I added a couple of apple snails, and I had a small outbreak of malaysian trumpet snails, which appear to have also helped things.
