Re: SYNO I.D. HELP

imo these look like njassae, but it is hard to tell and with there being a lot of malawi/tang stuff it would make sense. I would assume just as lake tang cats do, lake malawi cats would probably have a lot of variation within a single species as well.

why don't these look like njassae to anyone else?

Re: syno tanganicae

Well after going back, it looks like the humeral process of that 'ilebrevis' is much more elongated than any of my 'polli'. It is very easy to see in that first photo of the yellow 'polli' that I posted and the photo of the 'ilebrevis'. And I believe that the fish in this thread are the same fish ...

Re: syno tanganicae

IMO that photo captioned 'ilebrevis' is actually much closer to the more yellow 'polli' that I posted first, which is why I thought that those four fish that I got from Old World in a mixed lot of synos were ilebrevis (they are all around 5"). While the 5 that I got from Atlantis are often times ...

Re: Synodontis tanganicae -- Looking for information, more pics

You should check out the other thread for lots of photos. I got 8 of these guys from Atlantis, which is where I am guessing you are looking at these; I would act quickly they probably won't last long. The only question it looks like Richard didn't answer was: how active they are. My group of 8 is ...

Re: syno tanganicae

Dinyar I completely agree with you about the unidentified species and hobbyist and importers looking to tag these fish with an available and catchy name to sell or to research it. Anyway, here are a couple more photos... the first is a different female than I photographed before, both her left and ...

Re: syno tanganicae

I am very interested as well to see your synos Dinyar. Richard, here is photo of one of my pollis that I got from Atlantis about 8 months ago, I think they are text book polli, I have 5 total all ranging from 5.5" to ~7". The other smaller gold polli (1 of 4) that I posted earlier came from a ...

Re: syno tanganicae

Well thanks Toby for getting these cats in for us. When I spoke with Jon at Atlantis he said that Peter had ordered more dhontis and hopefully that on their next shipment they will get more.

Re: syno tanganicae

The third photo was taken with a different overhead light. The first and third fish are very similarly colored and in real life they are closer to the first photo than the third. (side note: I only crop and resize my photos) When I received them they all came in really light in color, very close in ...

Re: syno tanganicae

I ended up getting 8 of the Synos from Atlantis. They are very hard to photograph, at least for me. But here are 3 photos of 3 different fish. The first photo is a female, the 3rd day after I got them she looked gravid, then the next morning she was thinner and had the tattered dorsal that she now ...

Re: syno tanganicae

After all the reading that I have been doing I think the only way for me to really figure out what is going on with all these mis-identified lake tang synos is to spends years in the water with them in Africa, then possibly I will be able to differentiate the difference between a tanganicae, a ...

Re: syno tanganicae

Here is the photo they posted on their website http://i596.photobucket.com/albums/tt47/Nick_Frost/synodhonti2.jpg I think it looks just as much dhonti as the fish in the profiles section. As far as dhonti being only know from the holotype as not being spotted, it is my understanding that as dhonti ...

Re: syno tanganicae

I have 4 of the tanganicae coming, should be here Tuesday. I was under the impression that the 'dhonti dwarf' is irsacae, correct? My very amateurish opinion: from looking at photos of the 3 species throughout the web, tanganicae and irsacae have underslung mouths (more polli like), with tanganicae ...

Re: syno tanganicae

I was trying to decide if these where tanganicae or irsacae (aka dhonti dwarf). What are your thoughts? And how many I should get... at this size if they were tanganicae they would take 10-15 years to get 10"+ from my understanding and if they end up being irsacae then they shouldn't break 10 ...

Re: breeding Synodontis polli

Just to add a little bit more information to this topic, as in my other post I purchased 9 wc individuals. http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=26964 After some thought I decided to place all the "polli's" in one tank and after they settled 'a lot' of territorial disputes they have ...

Synodontis Polli or ...

My first post here and I don't know a lot about syno's, besides they do great in my mbuna tanks and are just as interesting. I am trying to lear about them but I am in need of some help. I have 9 Synodontis that I need help identifying. The first one was purchased as Syno eurystomus (from what I and ...
