While I believe that's the easiest time I've had grabbing a fish, they did not enjoy being upside down.

banjo cat/Bunocephalus coracoideu?

Stumbled across this pair, checked the catalog before I impulse bought them, want to make sure they're what I think they are. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b285/Seikalru/20160218_135403.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b285/Seikalru/20160218_221634.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b285 ...

Mystery fish, sold as Bumblebee Cat

The guys at the fish shop couldn't ID this fish, they figured it was some kind of Bumblebee cat, which of course tells me nothing. I apologize for the bad pics, my buddy was using his iphone. I have no clue what this is. Found him in a tank he wasn't listed on, along with a madtom that shouldn't ...

Re: Madtom ill, labored breathing

I've got it by itself in an empty 20L with a cave, trying to find a spare filter or air stone. Should I worry about my other fish? Should I medicate the whole tank? If so should I just put him back in with the others? It's still breathing heavily, and cant seem to swim right, it's more like flailing ...

Re: Madtom ill, labored breathing

Well, it's still alive, but swims wobbly if at all.

I might be able to isolate it. I'll do a search on parasites and see what comes up. It's anus doesn't have any more of that white stuff which looked like clear wispy poop. it's anus still looks swollen though.

Re: Madtom ill, labored breathing

I've been feeding frozen(then thawed) bloodworm, glass worms/mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp w/spirulina. and fresh slices of zucchini. Ran out of wafers and the new packs haven't shown up yet so it's been just the frozen stuff plus veggie. The madtom in question is full sized at about 3" and ...

Re: On the subject of the impending Energy Crisis.

Oddly enough, I'm not worried about an energy crisis. Part of that is you are seeing a push for less oil dependent tech right now. Fully electric cars have made their debut(admittedly they don't go very far yet) and hybrid engines need less gas. I don't know how long the oil will last, but I'm ...

Re: Coldwater 150G

It's to bad bullheads are illegal over there, on the flip side snakeheads are illegal over here, and they seem like they would be interesting to keep.

Judging by their invasion in our waterways, you could definitely keep them in a wide temp range, and save your mother an awful electric bill.

I haven't tried him on broccoli yet, but I'll pick some up. Broccoli and zucchini are some of those few veggies I'm not tempted to snack on myself! I'll only have to keep my boyfriend from eating them. :d

Re: Food question for a "common pleco"

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'll add them back to the food roster, want to keep things varied, just wasn't sure if they had anything the veggies didn't.

He's not that big, only about 8.5", has been for almost six months.

Food question for a "common pleco"

I have a Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus and had a question regarding feeding. I've read the article on feeding plecos and was unsure on one thing. I've been feeding him fresh veggies like cucumber and zucchini, but wanted to know if the algae wafers I fed him originally would be a good idea in ...

Re: Is this a madtom??

Lucky! Nice looking fish. I've been putzing around this website, http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/catfish/ictaluridae/about.htm and it has some great descriptions of the different madtoms if you want to look. I think it looks a bit like a Noturus flavus but I'm no expert. It does seem to have the "light ...

Re: My 16 yr old Catfish needs a name.

I have no idea what it is, but that is defiantly no ameiurus. They eyes are too big, the head too small, and the barbels too long. I may be an armature to fish-keeping but I pull bullheads out of the water all day while fishing. The dorsal fin also is the wrong shape.

Re: looking for recomendations for design

I see. I honestly don't know a thing about construction, so I will take your advice and scrap the only acrylic front idea. I really don't want to climb in to a tank with a bowfin in it, they are infamous for big teeth and bad attitudes, and bullhead stings are painful too. I would probably have to ...

Re: looking for recomendations for design

Well, the tiles wouldn't be on the back of the aquarium, they would be the back, but i think we're just using different words o describe the same idea. well, that would make my dimensions a hair short. A longer tank isn't a problem, but width is another story. I'm about 5'3", how the heck do I reach ...

Re: looking for recomendations for design

what would be the necessary dimensions for a fish that gets in the 25-30"? the bowfin is more of an ambush style predator than a cruiser. would 92x42x36 be more appropriate? I'm fond of running more than one kind of filter on a tank, the sump & canister sounds like a good combination. I was thinking ...

looking for recomendations for design

I have a goal tank, for when I get my fish room. This is not a current or near-future project, but I like to plan ahead, occasionally way ahead. Pterygoplichthys ID

I'm 99.9% sure he's a Pterygoplichthys, and he was sold to me as a "common" pleco, but which flavor of Pterygoplichthys he is eludes me, he has a reticulated belly, but doesn't quite resemble the pictures of disjunctivus that the cat-elog suggests as a common mix-up. He's 7" from tip to tip.

Re: Sun Cat sans fins

Update! The fish(here on known as Horas) has regained most of his dorsal fin and his adipose seems fine. The caudal and anal fins also show some recovery. His ventral fins are still gone, and I think they may stay that way, and I haven't been able to see any recovery of his pectoral fins, they ...

Re: greedy pim. pictus problems

I'm not sure the sun cat poses a threat to most of my fish ( I couldn't care less if he eats the platys) He's about two inches at the moment, the pleco is 5" going on 15", the loaches are 4" going on 10", and the pictus are 2.5" and get around 5-7" right?(I know the cat-elog says 5" but I've talked ...

Re: greedy pim. pictus problems

Unfortunately splitting them up is not an option at this time, nor is a shift in tank mates. The sun cat is actually a bit smaller that the pictus for now, and he competes fairly well. I guess the real question is will it harm the pictus to be gorging themselves daily, or should I wait on feeding ...

greedy pim. pictus problems

I recently acquired three Pimelodus pictus, and I quickly noticed their enthusiasm for food (vacuums come to mind). The bulging bellies are both comical and alarming. their tankmates are one "common" pleco, two weather loaches, three platys, and one sun cat. the platy eat their crisps long before ...

Re: Sun Cat sans fins

I have various sized terra cotta pots for caves and some gnarled driftwood that the pleco likes to hide under, it was just after I put them in the new tank that he tried hiding under the pleco. Now he mostly hangs out in a decent sized amazon sword and shares it with the loach half the time. I admit ...

Thanks for the info, I'll try to find that anatomy page. If anything, he's been bothering some of the other fish. When I moved everyone into the new tank, he kept trying to hide under my pleco, so the pleco would move, and he'd try to get under him again. Eventually he gave up and went to cuddle on ...

Please forgive me my lack of fin terminology, it is terrible. Most of the fin on the back is there the "arm" fins on either side are just the main ray, like little sticks the tail and the long fin on the bottom/back of the fish are very stubby, he almost looks flat on bottom the little fin on the ...
