Re: Emerald Catfish in a tiny tank?
I don't post here often but here I feel I need to (and I hope I have understood correctly). 5.5 Us Gallons=20 litres of water, UK Gallons=25 litres of water. Take out some volume for substrate/decor and perhaps at worst this gives water volume of 15 Litres/best 20? I would not keep anything other ...

N.American Shiners? I keep Notropis and Cyprinella species indoors, they should be ok as long as not too cold (i.e under ice).

I keep two males in a wood only tank and in my experience also they are very shy. If you don't have plants try lowering your light levels and you may see more of them. Or you may not.

I Think its L265 because of the way the 2 middle stripes meet L265 has no bars/stripes on dorsal/tail. It also has a pastel orange/peach edge to those fins. I don't think your fish is L265, I have a male and he looks quite different to your fish. I think you have a vittata, but as has already been ...

Re: Shouldn't we maybe have voted on this..as a planet?
There was mention of the dam in the April National Geographic mag, which was devoted to the subject of freshwater. The Earth's axis has been tilted by nearly a inch by the dam and the water behind it-I still can't get my head around facts like that. I agree with andywoolloo, projects of this ...

Re: Acidic ph and filtering.
The thought was prompted by a visit some time ago to a well respected lfs. I had an ammonia spike and was asked what the ph of my water was, this being c6, they told me that in acidic water I would have ammonium, which was virtually non toxic. If this is correct, I wondered why filter at all in ...

Acidic ph and filtering.
Had a chat about this elsewhere and was never completely satisfied with the outcome (there wasn't one.) Is it neccessary to biologically filter using acidic water? Assume water is <7 and stable there. Could the build up of ammonium be controlled with w/c, avoiding nitrite.nitrate.

Nice article, couldn't PFK have been talked into four pages though?
And the frustration is, I've a cold tank ready and waiting for Gobies, the uplands would have been perfect.

When stressed H. zebra turns pink, it's normal and as soon they are back in their right environment they will become white and black looking normal. Janne That's why I joined this forum, info like that is invaluable; in 3 years of fishkeeping I've never read or heard about this trait in this fish ...

Received a copy of the Smithsonian atlas this morning. Looks to be excellent, very indepth. Amazon Map?
Can anyone advise of a good map indicating places of interest/tributaries along the Amazon. I read various threads on this forum but don't have a clue where the places are yet. I have an atlas but it's small and hard to read. A map indicatingonly places of interest would be nice!
Thanks in advance.

Re: ID this interesting looking panaque
It is indeed very similar, Matthew, to the example in your pic. As you suggest it's the elongation at the snout that first struck me, the distance between eye and tip of snout seems massive and not a little odd; as sunfish suggests perhaps this is a consequence of condition. A new L no. would be ...

Took the kids to Bolton Museum and popped into the aquarium. Photo's aren't great, I had to fight holidaying families a five year old pocket camera and keep my eye on four kids. The very large tank which housed the Pseudodoras is being refurbished and some fish are temporarily cramped. Very nice S ...
