Hi! Thanks for replying! The hardness of the water is GH: 10 and KH:5. The pH sits at 7.5 (both in the tank and straight from the tap). The tank is 48x18x18, planted (all plants are in pots so the cichlids leave them alone - which they've been doing) and lots of driftwood pieces. It doesn't have a ...

Shovelnose and pictus cats

So what do you all think? Could these two species live ok together in a 70 gal tank? Currently, my lima is almost 10" long and is about 2 years old (or so). He/she's living in a 70 gal tank with 3 lake malawi cichlids, after it ate the smallest one (who came in at a little under 3"). Since the ...

Hi there! I have clown plecos as well and they are kept in tanks decorated with mopani driftwood. The lfs should carry a variety of sizes of driftwood. It is expensive - but I love the way it looks in a tank - and there's lots of little crevaces (sp?) and whatnot for the plecos to hide in.

Thanks Barbie - I read thru that lecture and yes, there is a LOT of info on there! Thank you!

But I have a question still: what are "odontodes"? I haven't a clue what they could be - whiskers of some sort? LOL

Sexing clown plecos

Hey everyone! I was wondering if someone out there could help me out a bit... I currently have 2 clown plecos in a 30 gal tank. The tank is quite crowded right now, but occupants will be moving in the near future when some other fish are large enough. Currently, in this 30 gal high, I have 3 adult ...

Thanks everyone for the replies - sorry I haven't been able to get back till now! So good news! I've got my hands on a 70 gal custom tank (48"x18"x18") which will be Furgee's new home. I did purchase a gibby which I'm growing out in another tank so he'll have a tank mate. But here's another question ...

LOL - oh no, he didn't eat any angels. He was actually quite docile. But the cories fell prey to him. It has been nothing but suprises re: this fish from the beginning. He is definetly a sorubium... I'm at work at the moment, I can attach a pic later when I get home. Another question though - how ...

I was completely dumbstruck. When I first got him I had kept him in a tank with full-grown angels and some cories and he ate ...

Shovelnose question

Hey all - I just have a question about my year old lima shovelnose. "Furgee" is about 9" long and lives by himself in a 30 gal long aquarium. It's a bit tight, but he has to wait for one more year till I'm done university and can afford to buy him the 95 gal I've been checking out at the lfs and ...

Pictus Cats

Just wondering, but do pictus cats have to be kept in groups of 2+ individuals?? I have 2 catfish that were moved from one tank to another of their own and the move was very stressful for them, even though I tried to lessen the stress as much as humanly possible. Since the move, they both became ...

Hi... I have never seen the test strips for testing water. I have only used the drop kits. The pH from my tap is 7.4 and all my tanks will consistently test at 7.4. But I'm interested to know now what the KH and GH (if they aren't the same thing) are! THanks for the help everyone!

When I bought the fish I wasn't aware of how big they get! I mean, I had heard stories, but I was told that the fish would grow to the size of the tank - I have since then become way more informed, but that was the biggest tank I had to offer him. I inspected the body after taking it out of the ...

My common pleco

Hi all... I am seriously dumbstruck right now. I have a 30 gal tank that is (or rather was) home to a 6 1/2" common pleco and an 8" lima shovelnose catfish. They are the only two inhabitatants and have been together for 2 years with no problems. In the past 5 days, my pleco has gone from acting ...

As for roomates, I'm still living at home so there's nothing being done to or near the tank that I don't know of (I've got my family trained! :D ) I keep them at 78-80 degrees.. is this too cold? too warm? Well they've seemed to settle down - no more noises anyway. Except one is refusing blood worms. It's been 2 days now. Do you think it's still stress? It was kind of freaky sounding... gave you a bit of a chill!

How long do these catfish live for? I haven't been able to find a lot of information on them - are they best in pairs or more than 2? I just love mine! They are so neat! Well, actually there is a pleco. But other than that, none. I hope they can just hold on for a bit more. They will really like that 90 gal. Is that big enough for two? The biggest is only 7" and the little one is about 5". The older one is quite wide though.

Hello everyone! I have a couple of questions of you all... I currently have one 9" lima shovelnose catfish in a 30 gallon tank. I just purchased a second shovelnose (same breed) who is approx. 5" long. Could the two go together or is the newest one too small? I also have 2 pictus catfish in the tank ...
