OK - any ideas which L number or do you think they are hybrids? I understand that many of the similar L numbers could be variants of the same species or are undergoing evolution from sub species to distinct species or even possible that natural hybrids may occur? e.g. like some african lake ...

In my humble opinion you need a none of the above option.
please enlighten me..... b-) From the pictures posted, I would have to say none of the above options seem like a likely ID.

8 to 9cm long body - looking at the fish and from past experience of older fish with faded colours etc. I would say they are youngish adults?dconnors wrote:What size are these? Striped hypan patterns will change as they age...

I am almost certain you have a L340 Megaclown - I have kept these for a number of years.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think they are O.stuebelii as they don't have feathery whiskers. The closest species they look like on planet catfish is O.morei but with more red colouration??

I bought 4 of these fish as Opsodoras sp. white line from Pier recently. They are an unusual brown-purple colour with a white belly, red in the fins and red/pink along the lateral stripe

Does anybody please have any ideas on the sex of these L240?
My thoughts were:
Fish 1 - quite aggressive and spends time in slate cave, nicest colouration/pattern, thickened 1st ray of pectoral fins, rounded nose with bristles on side of nose. Confident this is a male.
