What is the definition/translation of pleco as in the etymology. In Hypostomus plecostomus it states pleco means sucker. But in the "Just Say Pleco" article by Shane and Julian it says "what we now call Hypostomus plecostomus (Hypo= underneath; stomus=mouth and pleco=plated , in case you were ...

plated or sucker?

Silly question to follow. I have been reading up on the changes of the "common" pleco over time. In this research I have found conflicting info, is the pleco in plecostomus plated or sucker? One place/article says plated but the only real plecostomus (H.plecostomus) says that it is sucker. A further ...

I had a very young common do the same thing. Several people said plainly fish jump. But you need to determine why. Was it water condition, a tank mate or size. I feel that mine was tank size as the other tankmates were a school of neons and the water was good (7.0 A 0 N 0 N 5). If I were that fish I ...

Not that I want to disagree with silurus but the headshot with dark base color and small spots look more Liposarcus pardalis to me. Most gibby pics I have seen are dark spots on light base.

One more for ID

I purchased this pl*c about 2 months ago. It ame out of a shipment of common pl*cs, but is far from Liposarcus pardalis. I thought it might be a true Hypostomus plecostomus, but it was hard to get good pictures then. Here are some various shots. I am trying to get a good mouth shot, but it doesn't ...

Another ID please

Here is another of my cats for your iding pleasure. This was purchased as a A. temminicki. I thought it was a Ancistrus triradiatus by the stripe and overall shape, but the small spots up around the head have me a little confused. Fish approx 3" in length. http://www.mollyman.com/forum/album_pic.php ...

I would say it looks more like Farlowella vittata as the rostrum looks narrow and long in relation to the body as compared to the stubbier look of the Farlowella acus.

Is the pl*c in question have a reddish color in it's body or is it more like the tail and dorsal fin are red or tipped in red? I purchased a Flame gibby that turned out to be a L114 Leopard Cactus. A picture would be extremely helpful.

Thanks guys. I thought I had identified it right. As for the Green & Royal having sunken eyes, I don't think they were, maybe the royal a little but they are not now. The pics were taken two weeks ago, the day I bought them. They both have been eating well and have even to slightly extended bellies.

Flame Tail Gibby??

Purchased from my LFS this AM. It came in last week with my L200 and L190, but I hesitated. It was labeled as a Flame Tail Gibby, I've neverheard that one. My thought is an L114, yes the tail is orange. I know it's small, just over an inch, but I was hoping we might be able to tell. http://www ...

H. plecostomus ID?

Here is a pic of one of my new pl*cos.
It was shipped in a batch of commons. It is only 1 1/2 maybe 2" long. I counted 7 dorsal rays.
It looked just like the second H. Plecostomus pic in the catelog.

My plecostomus

Thanks, Andy

Dickens, having been where you are I know what you mean. I have also learned what they mean too. There are several different types of pl*co that will clean up your tank's algae. But suggesting the best one for your tank depends on much room you have and will it get along with your inhabitants. Also ...

Larry and Shane, Thank you both for your input, it has made a world of difference. My main goal is the successful mating of the P. maccus. To be able for the Farlowella to breed as well would be awesome. So 4 P. maccus would make the starts of a good breeding colony. Now being able to sex the ...

Thank you, coming from you that carries some weight.
My focus is on the P. maccus. Should I go for 3 or 4 of each to get male and female?
I like the twigs and will continue to reserach them since they are ok w/ the clowns.

Farlowella & maccus

Can I get Farlowella vittata and Panaque maccus to coexist peacufully and possible breed in a 40G long? I would like to go 3 of each or more to get pairs. The tank is a sand base with slate pvc and bogwood hiding spots. Planting will be done soon.

Ok here's a good one. I am going to try and sneak my digicam into my lfs later today, but heres a description. They call it a Galaxy Pl*co, but is no where near a Leporacanthicus galaxias. It was about 3" long and seemed a to have a broad head. The body color appeared to be a medium brown slightly ...

Not great pics but maybe you could help or tell key differences to tell them apart.
Been treated as an H. Pl*co, but I think it's a L. Pardalis. Just got know.

UnCommon Pl*co Poo

Hi all! I have had my Common Pl*co for about a month now and growing well in his small 10gal. I know it's too small, but I preping him a new home as the master of a 90gal shortly. Anyway he has been extremely healthy and active even during the day. This AM I noticed a super poo all over my tank ...
