can cories smell?

as i was watching my cories this morning swimming around the bottom of the tank at feeding time i noticed that they seem to swim around looking for food pretty randomly. sometimes one would stop and swim away just centimeters from a shrimp pellet. i've noticed the same behavior with my fry. can ...

we do not all get to see the same fish. physical locations are a big part of this, as are the circles in which one travels. most of the cories on this site i will never get the chance to see because A) even the best fish stores in my area don't have much of a catfish selection. if i go to a fish ...

hey there. i've got a bunch of cory fry hatched on february 27th. (they are almost 3 moths old) most of them are showing coloring like their parents. some, however, are still pretty small and look a lot like fry. i would like to change the substrate in the tank (large gravel) to something more ...

other than checking water parameters (they will be paler if ammonia or nitrite are too high), you could look for other stressors (like other fish in the tank that pick on them) and try changing to a darker substrate. when my C. aeneus went from tan gravel to flourite (reddish brown with some black ...

i think you're supposed to use enough methelyn blue to just tint the water blue. i'd want someone with more experience to back me up though, as i have never done this myself.

that's why the cories are moving. i'm afraid something like that will happen, and now that i know about your experience, i'm even more anxious to get the cories out. although there's no way a cory could fit in the goldfish's mouth, i don't want the goldfish to even be tempted. the goldfish mouths ...

here, most "gravel cleaners" from your website are either called gravel vacs, siphons, or pythons. maybe you just use different terms for the same things or group them differently.

feeding peas is common when goldfish gulp too much air and float on the surface constantly or when they're constipated. the peas clean out the digestive tract rather speedily. the long-term solution is usually to stop feeding floating foods, and/or stop feeding so much or feed more greens. swim ...

depends on the type of catfish you have. some like cooler temperatures than others. take a look in the cat-e-log to find the ideal temperature for your catfish. Goldfish are easier to keep in their own tank, but they're not as incompatible temperature-wise as most might think. most fancy goldfish ...

if you're talking about fish getting stuck to the filter and not getting sucked up the filter tube, you may have a more serious problem at hand. most well fish, even small fish like neons and my .5 inch cory fry can outswim a filter. they may get curious and swim up the intake if they can. if they ...

while sharp gravel will wear down cory barbles, i have found high nitrates to be much worse. my gravel (flourite) is not extremely sharp, but after a week or so i found my cories had slightly shorter barbles. fortunately, they have not shown noticable erosion since and their babies are almost past ...

but i don't think you can get in trouble for listing positive things. i really like the idea of listing good stores in a particular area. it's taking them off the list when they get criticized that poses the biggest problem (as far as i can see).

what kinds of chemicals did you add?
did you add a pH lowering substance?
did you rinse the gravel first?

the first and last questions are most important. if you answer those two, we'll be more likely to figure it out.

i saw a cory in the LFS yesterday that looked much like C. punctatus. it's probably C. punctatus, but i was wondering if C. reticulatus has dots as a juvinile that become the squigglies (such a scientific term!) as the fish matures, much like C. trilineatus. anyone know? it looks like this fish may ...

i'm not too keen on the rating idea. first off, people's opinions of what constitutes a good fish shop will differ. second, putting in 1-5 suggests that people could put up negative comments which we could get in trouble for. if we have a rating system of 5-10, with specific criteria that have to be ...

i'm pretty sure it was algae, as it was growing on all the plastic plants as well, and cutting back on the lights made it go away. a hatching of snails took care of the green stuff  i'm not sure why it was sticking, but it has since stopped.
