Re: Questions on Keeping Shrimp with plecos
I'm with FantasticFins on this one; I keep cherry shrimp with my zebra plec juvies so that they have a constant supply of live foods to prey on, and they are doing fantastically. I now keep cherry shrimp with my hypans and peckolitas just so they have something to chase down and snack on as they ...

Seasonal fluctuations for juvies too?
I was thinking about wet/dry seasons for trying to breed my L260s when the thought dawned on me that even juveniles might benefit from seasonal changes too. I was thinking that perhaps fry can have better growth rates if they go through more natural seasonal changes too. Ie, having a restricted or ...

Re: I got caught up in the "oh, aw" game
Hello fellow canuck! In terms of hypan breeding, it seems to be a waiting game for many. RO I don't think is required, as I have heard many stories of people spawning various hypans after a large tap water WC. Also, a local (Toronto) breeder of zebra plecos breeds his in treated (prime or something ...

L260 to sex.
All btw 3 - 3.5 inches TL. I know the pictures are not particularly great, but I am inept at photography. #1: http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll255/ashikatani/P6212494.jpg #2: Only one of the bunch to have odontal growth exceeding the groove (patterning seems to be fairly wide too, and stockier ...

I have 2 farowellas, not entirely sure of the species after this thread, but they both also have long (~2 cm) extensions on their fins also.

Yet again, L236?
A seller here is offering this as L236. I have been somewhat skeptical after seeing so many requests for IDs come up for L236, only to find that the experts agree that it is not. I am not an expert by any means, but this fish does not appear to be L236. http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll255 ...

Re: Bristlenose very protective re his food
Haha, sounds very right. I have a female BN that is protective of all food in the tank. If she sees the (smaller) male BN on the zucchini on the other side of the tank, even if she's eating on her piece, she'll go over and shove the male off to eat his... I've seen my gold nuggets do the pouncing ...

Re: Bristlenoses eating my swords?
I also have amazon swords in my tank, and the BNs can strip some of the leaves, but usually this only occurs to the oldest outermost leaves. I find that they either leave alone, or the newer leaves are not affected at all. Unless they're eating the whole thing, I wouldn't worry about it too much ...

Re: Suitable pl*co for 10g tank
I was thinking of 10-12 harlequins but they are not from south america. Harlequins won't school either, unless alarmed. Try some rummy nose tetra (hemigrammus rhodostomos), which are from SA. I have 10 in a 75g (280L) planted tank and they look great and school all the time. In your tank, if they ...

Re: River stone in fish tanks
I get stones from a river, so I give them a good scrub to get rid of loose dirt, then a high-salt bath to kill any macro/microorganisms (just in case), then a freshwater soak to remove any salt, then use them.

To dither or not?
I know that you can quell some aggressiveness between some fish by having dither fish, and can make other fish more secure by adding dithers, but what does everybody think for their pl*cs? Does the addition of dither fish seem to bring them out more? What species have worked well, and what have not?

I worked at a fish market for a few years, and bassa is indeed Pangasius Hypophthalmus. Tilapia is usually one of a number of species from that genus Tilapia. Both are delicious

Re: strange behavior - ich?
I've seen the same thing in one of my tanks before; scratching without any apparent malaise otherwise, which isn't resolved with water changes. I treated for a few days with a copper based med (aquarisol or something, but below the recommended dosage, as it was in a heavily planted tank with inverts ...

Re: Feeding L-081
So far, from what I can see, they eat up vegetable matter with great gusto (cucumber and zucchini are the only ones I've tried so far). Animal matter (I'm giving previously frozen crushed shrimp, and rarely, fish roe, every third night), along with some flake from other inhabitants of the tank and ...

Feeding L-081
Hello! I picked up 5 2.5" - 3.5" L-081 last week from my lfs. Their tankmates (in a 75g) are 2 twig cats, a bunch of kerri and black phantom tetras. I've been giving them spirulina discs every night, and they mostly all get eaten. Today I wanted to give them some protein, but all I could find was ...

Hi there
First Post!
I've been lurking around here for a few weeks, checking things out. Have been keeping fish for over 15 years, but only recently got into pl*cs. I'm sure I'll learn lots more here!
