Re: 40 Gal breeder tank - stock ideas?

interesting choice richard, i must admit ive been focusing on L numbers because of their size, history of breeding in captivity, price range, and their ability to sell. Ive got to admit i dont know much about the catfish you listed so had a read, and was interesting reading at that! The fry seem to ...

Re: 40 Gal breeder tank - stock ideas?

Thankyou for the feedback guys. I'm now in the process of making the stand and setting up lighting on the new tank, so things are finally getting underway! I have decided that L066 seem the best choice to breed in the end, a challenge, but within my price range at least! Does anyone have any ...

Re: 40 Gal breeder tank - stock ideas?

Ah yes, i appologise! its 21 inches by 21 inches by 21 inches, its a seabray tank if that helps at all? i believe its just over 40 gallons in US, 33 gallons in UK, or 151 liters. If i had 0.33 liters, id be lucky to be breeding daphnia! If L046 would have current problems in a cube tank, is there ...

40 Gal breeder tank - stock ideas?

Heya there guys! hope everyone is doing well. Been visiting here on and off for a while now getting a good idea about catfish in general. I've just bought myself a new tank, 21 inches cubed, making it around 40 gallons i think. I've got a main display tank set up already, and would like to use the ...

Re: My cherry barb is sick, can anyone help?

One thing i would wonder is what sort of illness this is, and more importantly is it possible it could spread to other fish within the tank, or should the others be safe? perhaps a holding tank would be needed to treat the illness and keep other fish safe? im afraid i dont know enough about what the ...

Raphaels... too nocturnal?

Heya there, a few of you will probably know me from some other posts... ive been busy weighing up the choice between feather whisker (spatula whiskers here on PC), pictus, or raphaels. For the first time i saw some raphaels in my local store and was very interested in getting them, due to their ...

Re: Feather Whisker Catfish?

We have 6 cherry barbs with a gravel substrate. In the petshop they are also kept on a gravel substrate... but as ive seen in the past, this often accounts for very little. I was reading that to keep them in best health, every now and then they should be fed small live fish. We dont have the ...

Re: Compatibility of Pictus and Barbs.

We currently have 6 cherry barbs which are happy little chappies (and chapesses) that will swim around together getting up to all sorts of antics, and we have even got them feeding from our fingers at the start of each feeding session. They seem inquisitive as to antena (our cameroon armoured shrimp ...

Re: Feather Whisker Catfish?

Wow! thankyou for all of the help, but Richard was right, it is Phyllonemus typus. For those that are interested, the link was Phyllonemus typus I asked the guys in the shop and they were very helpful. Told me that they werent 100% sure but knew the fish came from Tanganyika, which in turn helped me ...

Compatibility of Pictus and Barbs.

Sorry to revive an old thread, btu i had a question about pictus and rather than start a new topic i figured id post in an old one. Ive done a search and found a lot of people suggesting getting a shoal of pictus, and ive also seen people saying dont keep them with barbs. May i ask why not to keep ...

Re: Feather Whisker Catfish?

The shop is the aquarium shop in country market, on your way from farnham to bordon. I think its a maidenhead aquatics store but never really paid much attention. It could well be the fish mentioned in the link given, but without any pictures im finding it very difficult to tell, there is just a ...

Re: Feather Whisker Catfish?

IT deffinatly wasnt anything like a shovelnose, they have them at the pet shop too (which i disagree with, due to the size they grow to!) but it didnt appear like them at all. They seemed to be swimming around, but less than the pictus.. which always seem to be o the move! i appreciate all the help ...

Re: Feather Whisker Catfish?

Thankyou for another reply! the second fish was deffinatly out, although i can see where you were coming from with the barbles. The Mystus looks like it might be very close to being right, deffinatly on the right track, but imagine the top barbles facing downwards, as if all of the barbles are ...

Re: Feather Whisker Catfish?

Thankyou for the suggestion, but it wasnt a feather fin catfish. It was thinner than a featherfin, around the slimness of a pictus, with barbles that were longer than those of a featherfin. I know this makes it sound a bit like a pictus, and i guess in some ways it was similar, but imagine more of ...

Feather Whisker Catfish?

Hello there, i just got back from a local pet shop of mine and wrote down a few of the catfish species that we saw. There was a pimpictus, bumble bee, and finally one called a featherwhisker. The first two i was able to identify here on planetcatfish, but the featherwhisker seems a bit of a mystery ...

Re: New fish owner... sizes of catfish?

Thankyou for all of the kind and helpfull replies! i must admit i was looking at catfish around the 8-10inch range, but will cut that back a bit now and possibly concentrate more on the 5-8 inch ish range instead. I have filled in my location as being from Guildford in Surrey, but for some reason it ...

Re: New fish owner... sizes of catfish?

thankyou for the advice! your right about the dimensions, 85cm is the length, 45 is height, 35 is depth. It's a 125L Fluval tank. Im based nearish London (Surrey) in England. The problem i seem to be having is different places say different things about fish sizes... ive heard estimates that we ...
