Re: featherfin catfish question

I named my featherfin "Invisicat" because she was always hiding for the first few months, and I never saw her feed in the first month either- she's made up for it since, as she's always about waiting for feeding time now. She grew from 1" to 6" in the first year, and got seriously fat in the process ...

Nice! Was that in France? We should start a new thread although it may be more appropriate elsewhere. Here's me with my biggest ever carp (and biggest ever fish, come to that) at just over 47lbs Your carp is 10 lb better than my best French carp... yes, the baby cat was in France on boilie whilst ...

Re: What do you look like?

I see LNB finally got her bike- good going! Whilst this is an ancient thread, it sort of fits that I include a picture from 2003- that's not far off the most recent picture I've got! The only catfish I've ever caught angling: http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c186/carp37/catfish25-0611-08-2a-1.jpg

good to see another SVAS member on the site- Planet Catfish is probably the all-out best aquarist website for specialist information/advice.

Re: Irresponsible shops...

When I was a teenager in the 80s, just about every large aquatic shop I visited had Pangasius for sale- now it seems to be a rarity in my area (South Yorkshire). Arowana and pacu are also much less commonly for sale than they used to be. Tiger and lima shovelnoses, and giraffe cats still seem to be ...

Re: Underwater photos from Mauritius

The trigger is Balistoides viridescens, watch out for them when they have a nest! We saw some HUGE ones in the Maldives. How big do these get? This was over 1m long and we estimated 20-25 lbs. in weight. Another species of trigger gave me my only ever "help! I'm afraid of this fish!" moment when a ...

Re: Underwater photos from Mauritius

I love the one of the CATS all in a bunch. These were my favourite fish too (but then again they are catfish); they reminded me of baby bullhead cats in France- it took us nearly a week to find them; I can't imagine why such poisonous fish are so secretive. Then again, it was a shock to see that ...

Re: Underwater photos from Mauritius

Did you take these scuba diving or snorkelling? I don't know how to scuba dive yet, but I was still amazed by how much I could see just snorkelling when last on holiday near a reef. These were all snorkelling- I snorkelled for two sessions each day, from one to two hours mostly (nearly four hours ...

Underwater photos from Mauritius

I've just got a new computer, and whilst trawling through disks to see what software needed putting on, I found a disk with these photos from a 2000 holiday in Mauritius. The quality's a bit poor, as they were taken with a disposable underwater camera, then scanned at too low a resolution, but they ...

Re: Newly Adopted & Ill Eupterus

I also think your nitrate test may not be quite as accurate as we'd hope for. It can be quite hard to determine if a colour is the same as what is on the paper, or just a little bit off. As long as it's much lower after than before, that's a good sign. I'd agree with this- aquarium nitrate test ...

sold as L191- Dull-eyed Royal Plec

Hi- I'm hoping someone with a better understanding of the Panaque nigrolineatus complex can help me with this fish- it was bought 26 months ago as a dull-eyed royal, L191, and at the time seemed to be a good match for the pictures of juveniles in the Cat-eLog. However, it doesn't seem to match ...

It looks like you were quite close for some of the shots? Did the mothers not get a bit twitchy about it? Atlantic grey seals at Donna Nook

I'm not really sure if I should be posting this here (mods- give me a shout if it's totally inappropriate please), but I've just had a great day out at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire looking at grey seals- apparently they've had over 1,000 pups this year. Sexing Callichthys?

3 years ago, I got 4 juvenile Callichthys callichthys from PC user Hoplo- these were between 3"-3.75" TL. One very quickly developed "ski-jump", thickened, orange-coloured pectoral spines, so I was pretty sure that one was male. The remaining three had shorter, less thickened pectoral spines lacking ...

Nice pictures Marc. I'd agree with Rupert that the roach/rudd are roach, not rudd. I wasn't previously aware that chub had changed it's genus to Squalius (I've not kept up with cypriniform nomenclature evidently  )- the fish in question looks as though it could be a chub, but could also be a ...

Re: unplugging heaters in summer in warm climates

My house is moderately new (about 20 years old) and quite small, so it stays pretty warm in summer (the heating is switched off from mid-April to mid-September). Every time we get a heat wave (not that often in Britain) I have to disconnect heaters for a week or so. I agree with Larry that heaters ...

Re: Holiday worries...

As Mats says, these should be fine- I've got nine Megalechis that went a fortnight without food whilst I was stuck in Spain during the Ash Cloud crisis. The only thing I'd suggest is to make sure the filters are running cleanly before you go- the fish won't starve, but might run short of oxygen if a ...

Re: Half Bronze Half Albino Cory with pictures

I've caught bream and carp which are "two-tone" (with the first half of the body darker or, more usually, lighter than the rest of the body), and had a male Geophagus which had the same thing- in the cichlid's case it reverted to normal after a couple of months. I think I've only ever seen one fish ...

Re: Non-nitrogen water quality issues for small volume ponds

thanks for the responses Mats, Bas Pels. @Bas Pels- I'm sure it's not spawning tubercles, as the white patches are on back of the dorsal fin of the worst affected fish, and on the pectoral fin of the less affected fish. I'm not 100% sure it's fungus as the pond is a bit cloudy at the moment- I had ...

Non-nitrogen water quality issues for small volume ponds?

Hi- apologies for the incomplete title, I ran out of characters. Other than topping up any evaporation, I don't do any routine water changes ...

Re: L144 in Cat-eLog.

Even though it's wrong in the true sense of L-numbers, I'd be tempted to leave it in the L-numbers list, as what we're now calling "sp.4" is still going to be referred to as L144 in the trade for at least the foreseeable future.

Re: L144 in Cat-eLog.

Mats' solution seems pretty reasonable to me, including the link to L-numbers showing L144 twice (the real one and "sp.4").
