Re: Recovery advice needed post "toxic" H2O change
Thanks, Coriequest, as you've suggested I'm going with water changes. I'm only at the very basic level of plant keeping in my tanks, just enough to keep my cats happy ^:)^ . I've been pouring through all the older posts in the various forums here re: Melafix & have decided to do a 50% water change ...

Re: Recovery advice needed post "toxic" H2O change
As of this evening, I'm down by six assorted cories, a dozen more guppies & one zebra loach. The deaths seemed to have stopped for now, but I've definitely got fin rot on a number of the fish in various stages, the worst case being my youngest C. duplicareus who has completely lost his tail. I've ...

Re: Recovery advice needed post "toxic" H2O change
Thank you, Coriequest & Jools -- I'm leaving shortly to buy some carbon filters now. I've got some extra air pumps & stones (4) & will move out the bigger cats after a nice slow acclimation to the other tanks (water parameters are all good, but they have none of the other additives). Will stop ...

Recovery advice needed post "toxic" H2O change
I was going on vacation from Sat-Wed so I asked my brother-in-law (he keeps angels & gourami) to please feed my fish while I'm gone. On Tuesday night, he decided to do me a favor by doing my weekly water change for me (I do 20% weekly). Since he doesn't know how I do my changes or what to do for a ...

Re: Orange & green Cory (juvenile)
Wow -- the species photos for these cories are terrific, especially the site location photos supplied by Julian  My sincere thanks to everyone for helping me identify these little guys -- although I did see the previous post by BlackSoul, I didn't followthrough and check out the species ...

Orange & green Cory (juvenile)
Hi All, I've just recently purchased 8 of these little guys from my LFS who called them "Orange Corydoras from Peru". The pics below are of the portliest (and least camera shy) of the group and really don't capture their true colors. It is primarily orange with a large dark green "spot" in its ...

Re: Stress, snails and spawning..Grrr.
At any given time I have about an inch thick layer of thousands of tiny Potamopyrgus snails eating the sludge in the filter, but I don't think I've ever seen one out in the aquarium proper. Possibly something eats them. While they are in the filter as well, they seem to be most prolific along the ...

Re: Stress, snails and spawning..Grrr.
By any chance, does this look like the snail infesting your tank? I've unfortunately had these guys since my last mail order plant shipment ::grrrr:: but they don't seem to be anything more than a visual irritant. They neither eat my plants nor bother my fish and actually keep my white gravel white ...

Re: Question about growth rate for C. similis
As small as newly hatched brine shrimp are, even adult Corydoras love it and it is a very good food. Sorry for the late reply (recently recovered from a very long bout with mono) -- I've been feeding my little guys the hatchlings and they seem to be happier... not sure that I can detect growth yet ...

Question about growth rate for C. similis
Hi All, I'm looking for information regarding the growth rate of C. similis... I've had 8 "little guys" (approx. 0.75" to 1" in length) for over 4 months and have barely noticed any growth. I have them in my "outgrow tank" (10 gal, ph=7.0, temp = 79F, all other parameters neutral/normal) along with ...

Re: "Real" Syno decorus or hybrid?
Let's put it another way...why does your fish differ from your friends? Can you get a pic of his fish? Hi Richard B, I told my friend that my guy is the "real deal". I did ask if he wanted me to submit a pic of his Syno, but he declined. He's happy with his fish and he doesn't want to know if ...

Yay!! I love my "little" guy and my friend came off as a bit insulting, so it's nice to know that I was right! Thanks so much for the quick reply, Yann!

"Real" Syno decorus or hybrid?
Hi All, A visiting friend was admiring my tank when he noticed my S. decorus -- he also has one at home and he says that his looks slightly different from mine -- he thinks that mine may be a hybrid. I've always believed otherwise, but is this true? Since my "little" (bought him at 1.5" and is now ...

Just reclassified as cirrhosus since some of the patterning towards her tail has indeed become slightly larger, but the rest of her spots/features remain the same. Thanks everyone!

BP, I just wanted to let you know that I switched to metric after reading your post and am *much* happier with the results! I've been able to house groups of cats in my much larger tank without paranoia or degradation of water quality ^_^. Thanks SO much for the wisdom-sharing!

Many thanks everyone! I'll tentatively classify my female as A. 'Columbia' since she most resembles the pic in the Cat-eLog.

Re: Need ID on three pl*co's!!
Thank you, Veronika, for the pics and the post... I've got the same "chocolate pleco" and was having a very difficult time with the identification, but just couldn't snap a clear enough shot to ID.
And a very *big* thanks to you, Silurus, for the exact identification!

Diff btwn Ancistrus cirrhosus & Ancistrus "Columbia"?
Hi All, Can anyone tell me how to differentiate between the two? I've thoroughly examined all the pics of the bristlenose pl*cs in the database and (with the additional information from my LFS) have narrowed the field down to one of the two (although I have a young female and am unable to compare ...

P. costatus injury?
Thanks, Marc! I've been keeping a close eye on the area whenever he pops out into view and so far, it seems to be just sort of fading ever so slightly. I also ran my hands along the edges of all the mopani, bogwood, artificial root/cave structure, rocks, filter, and heater and can only assume that ...

P. costatus injury?
Hi All, After doing my early evening feeding today, I noticed some whitish marks on the side of my P. costatus that hadn't been there the last time I saw him on Monday night. Could someone please tell me if this is normal or if it's an abrasion or something else that I need to monitor? I do know ...

Pimelodus Pictus question
Thanks, Marc! I'll give my new cats a few more days to get used to their new tank and I'll get a third (I think that a fourth would push me over my inch per gallon ratio) to avoid any dominance issues. If there are any problems after a few days, I'll post a follow-up asking for more guidance :D . It ...

Pimelodus Pictus question
Hi All, I just added 2 (Columbian variety, I think based on the Cat e-Log pics) Pictus cats (approx. 3" ea) to my community tank yesterday and am concerned that their behavior may be something other than acclimation adjustments? I have an established, well-planted 40gal tank with both sand and ...

S. Eupterus and P. Costatus feeding dilemna
Thank you Marc and Richard! Due to midterms, I haven't been able to post a reply until now, but I've used both of your suggestions :D. My Syno did quickly pick up on the day/night feeding (at night, he just isn't fast enough to beat out my Platy at getting to the pellets) and is also learning to ...

S. Eupterus and P. Costatus feeding dilemna
Hi All -- I'm a definite newbie to the wonderful world of Catfish and I'm afraid that I've made a newbie blunder: I have an established and well-planted 40gal tank with 4 dwarf gourami, 3 German Blue Rams, 1 S. Eupterus (approx 6.5"), and 1 P. Costatus who I had originally "saved" from P*tco on 05 ...
